Johnny Herd versus Chelsea

Jonny (the ****ing nuts) Herd as i shall call him now on was an is a superb little lad everytime i see him he is getting better an better an yesterday typified it for me he is now a must start week in week out from now on. MOM for me also.
YEEEEEEELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOW

Maybe a blessing in disgiuse that hardiing can't come back as Herd needs to start playing for us as we are in mid table security and if there is one season where we can experiment then this is the year .

Thought he had a blinder today and not only did he defend like a lion , he was our best outlet at times and made Chelsea think with some great attacking play , well done the lad and please Tilly pick the same team for the next game .

Do you think putting a 451 formation out for a home game might get criticised by some ?

He's still got a bit to learn, his picking up of players in the box for example.I can think of 2 obvious moments,he was closest to Kalou for the opener but left him and the header in the dying seconds where he realised too late and couldn't react and just prayed that Mildy came to the rescue which we all know the outcome.
But he certainly looked excellent in other depaartments and has taken to his left-back slot in a cool manner.Well done Johnny.

Nice attacking run he had in the second half he just charged up with the ball, ok so he ran into trouble but still its nice to see him hungry for it!

I saw that and have to agree what a run! He just looked lively and hungry throughout the game. Dan Harding who? Why do we need to bother getting someone like him on stupidly high wages when we have someone as great as Herd coming through our ranks.

Can't believe how long it has taken us to finally give him the chances and let him show his full potential. Lets just hope this is a good sign.

So glad to see a thread on this lad. What a performance from him. 18 years old, goes out on the pitch at Stamford Bridge and plays out of his skin when a lot of the other players looked scared. Made some fantastic runs, clearance off the line and the throw in to provide the goal. What more could you ask for? Let's make sure we hold on to this one. Please can we learn from the Kightly incident Tilly?

Erm, close S_L..

I think the lad deserves a song referencing his outstanding display at the Bridge. Something that we can still be singing in a few years time to put smiles on our faces and on his!

he's prone to lapses in concentration- everytime i've seen him a couple of passes have been badly misplaced, and he gave the Chelsea wide players too much space a lot of the time (though that's understandable to a point given how good Cole's movement was). But the praise on this thread is well justified- he stood up to be counted and got better as the game went on. definitely up there for MOTM with Clarke and Mildy.

No he wasn't. Herd was on the post, well he should have been but he drifted in towards the middle of the goal. He didn't move in a great deal, but because of his lack of height he couldn't prevent it going in with a diving header.

He was superb on Saturday. A really mature performance from someone only making his 5th appearence from us. Well played Herd.

In my opinion, the Chelsea game could have broke him. Thankfully he did a damn good job, was not phased and looked comfortable!

Before the game i was wondering if he would play or not as Tilly may have wanted to 'protect' in case he had a bad game.

Em.

made joke hole look very average, didnt give him the option of keep throwing himself on the deck like he normally does by diving into hasy tackles .This lad is a proper defender , look forward to watching for many seasons to come .

agree with everything that has been said, but lets not get carried away. On other threads for other matches the defence has been slaughtered for not marking --- in other words not being where they should have been. For their goal shouln't he have been on the post ? Whether he could haved stopped it or not is irrelevant. If it was Francis having one of his 'not so good games' would we all have been blaming him for the goal?

if It wasn't his job to be on the post fair enough. overall I thought he was great , but lets not build him up so much that when he has an 'average' game we are all dissapointed.

again- I am not knocking him, I thought he was great.

Definately deserves to stay in the starting line up as he had a cracking performance against Chelsea. Would prefer to play him other than forking out for another left back.

Anyway, we could use the money made from both the chelsea revenues and the money saved on not getting another left back, and put it towards getting Freddy back on loan! ;)

Comment from Ron Martin in todays Echo- "After the weekend though and how well Johnny Herd played I think it’s clear we don’t need a new left-back.”
