John White

I be moving to Sudbury this year, so I probably pop down to Braintree when I can to watch the match, only 25 minutes drive!

An interesting appointment, he always said he wasn't interested in doing that, plus I wonder how that sits with his SUCET role? Maybe he's running two jobs now.

John was obviously good mates with Dan Kirby and I remember him launching a vehicle sourcing business. Always assumed he was looking to go down this route when he retired, likely in some sort of conjunction with Dan/TPC.

I interviewed John for the Yellow Advertiser earlier this week and the article is up online now.

He has effectively retired as a player "aside from emergencies and if we are short" also as Iron are part time, he will be able to combine his new coaching role with his work at the Southend Community & Educational Trust too.

The aren't many players that deserve to be mentioned as a legend but often do.

For me JW is a total legend. Stuck with the club and always gave 100%. Total pro and a really decent bloke too.

So pleased he is having opportunities to stay in football and remains part of SUFC.

I like John White and think he was decent when he played for us. Especially in the first season or two and 17/18.

But why did he stick around for so long? I wouldn't say he was JUST being loyal, he probably wouldn't have got a better deal or a decent move anywhere else. Plus he's local so was fairly easy to stay. So for me shouldn't be considered a legend.

You look at Kev who gave almost 10 years of imppecible service. The season before he was robbed off he won our POTY in the Championship! That's a legend.

I would put Ralph in that top bracket of loyalty.

But I'm massively happy to see JW excel in his career and wish him the absolute best.

Southend United legend John White has today announced his retirement.
Long-serving captain White made more than 250 appearances for Blues and scored eight league goals between 2013 and 2022.

He began his senior career at Colchester United, for whom he would also comfortably surpass 200 appearances.

Having played second-tier football for the U’s and enjoyed a run to the last 16 of the FA Cup, the 37-year-old became a Blue in the summer of 2013.
White had previously been at Roots Hall on loan in 2009, but this second spell saw him blossom into one of our finest defenders of the modern era, one of the highlights being winning the trophy in the 2015 play-off final.

Not many players can say they’ve represented both Colchester and Southend with such pride and loyalty. Thank you, John and the very best of luck for your retirement.
John has penned the following message to supporters.

Well that's season number 22 done and it hasn't ended the same way it started. After 22 years and 600+ club appearances, I have decided it is the right time to officially hang up my playing boots as I have moved into a new phase of my career. Those that have followed my progress will know I stepped up to assistant manager at Braintree Town this season and have loved every minute.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has had the slightest impact on my career to those that have helped mould me into the man I am today. Special thanks have to go to my wife Lianne, son Jacob and stepdaughter Danhi for being my rocks, my parents and brother for being there for me from the start, I couldn't have done it without you.

I would like to thank the clubs that I have played for, for giving me the opportunities to do the thing I've loved since I was a small child, the managers, coaches, back room staff, players, journalists and fans that have been there through the highs and lows.
Thank you Colchester United for all those incredible years coming through the youth team to making it pro, playing in the fifth round of the FA Cup, getting promoted, playing in the Championship, and so many more memories with great people. Special mention to Phil Parkinson (now at Wrexham) for giving me my debut and believing in me to get the job done.

Thank you Stevenage for giving me a chance to play some football when opportunities were lacking and then give me the drive to complete the season in the championship.
Thank you Wimborne Town for being incredible at a time I was beginning to doubt if my love for the game was still there. What an extraordinary club, surrounded by incredible people, players and fans. It gives me great pleasure to see the recent promotion and being crowned champions, especially to see my mate Scott Arnold lifting the trophy!

Thank you Southend United. At a time when I didn't know where my career was going to go, the last place I expected was the local rivals. This club and community opened its arms to me in a way that has left a mark on my heart. I feel like we have been through every emotion under the sun, the highs of play-offs games at Roots Hall, League One and nearly getting into the play-offs on the last day of the season, staying up on the last day of the season against Sunderland, and who could forget THAT day at Wembley! To have been so fortunate to lead the team out and walk them up the famous Wembley steps and lift the trophy to the lows of more recent times. Due to this I feel like the club is part of me and I'm so pleased that I am now working with the Community Foundation to try and bring the club even closer to the community with such an exciting time ahead.

Thank you Braintree Town for giving me an opportunity to enjoy another two years of playing with an emphasis on helping the young squads to progress and reach their potentials. It has been an truly memorable two years of successful football with an Essex Senior Cup and two playoff seasons, the second resulting in a play-off final victory against the team that dumped us out last year. We did the unthinkable and got the club back into the National League. Thank you for allowing me to make the step up to Assistant Manager through the season and really concentrate on nurturing our young talented players.

I’m looking forward to whatever comes next and will attack it with a smile on my face and the same fire I had week in, week out.
Best wishes
John White

Firstly, a top, top man. Him, along with Dan Bentley came along to watch a charity match I organised a week before the League One play-off final at Wembley. Both men had much more important things to worry about that week, but came along to support the day.

As a player, I always felt JW made the best of what he had. You forget at times that players play at this level have flaws in their games, but are incredibly talented to get to the level they go to. It’s not luck.

He had his flaws, but was an outstanding leader to us, during both of his spells. It says so much about him as a man and a player that two rivals he played for both think the world of him.

I hope he stays on at Braintree and gets a good reception off us at Roots Hall.
