A necessary evil!

Seriously, the ex-pats in Spain (and not just the English) are tolerated simply because the local economy thrives because of us. (And would possibly collapse without us.) Jávea has a very high ex-pat community - most of whom I am happy to say strive to integrate as much as possible with the local populace. Those who hole themselves up in urbanisations on the outskirts of town are derided by both the locals and those ex-pats who choose to live in and amongst the locals. They are a small minority with their "Little England" communities who refuse to integrate, learn the language, or take any part in contributing to local life but thankfully they remain the minority. Rather similar to the Asian communities in England, I think.

UPDATE -

Firstly, thanks to all for the comments.

I'm pleased to report a fairly painless exercise. The first girl I saw (when she got changed out of the school uniform) was just a form pusher. The second person I saw is leaving the industry after 27 years and really couldn't have given a flying feck. I have 13 weeks to find a job in the specialist role I perform (no wisecracks please

) before they'll get me to look for alternative employment. They can't offer me any job-seeking assistance (mainly because I blew their minds telling them what I've been doing for the last few weeks) and don't expect me to look locally just yet.

Financially I'm more than comfortable at least this side of 2007. My main concern is to get the NI contributions up to date. I have enough problems every year with my tax return and can do without this added complication. If the State want to pay me JSA on top of that then every penny helps as the ORM household is economising radically - for instance the beloved Imprezza will go back in mid-September if I haven't found anything. I certainly don't feel guilty at claiming JSA. I still have my season ticket until April next year so though I could claim fares for interviews I do have some morals

Jobwise I've got plenty of irons in the fire, some are no doubt bullsh!t but other are more promising. I should also be lining up some consultancy work as well which will bring in some much welcome funds.

I'm actually pretty disciplined about working on a new job, through agencies, headhunters, my contact network and the internet in the daytimes, just leaving the poker and porn until the evening and early hours.
