JCR Interview

how much did JCR actually go for?

Found this article:

The 24-year-old's transfer from Southend United beat the deadline on Friday by a couple of hours.
The fee for the former Chesterfield and Rotherham United player is thought to be £175,000.
Manager Simon Davey said: "We've been tracking Jamal for six to eight weeks now. We put a bid in and it was turned down and we finally got a bid agreed. It was late.
"He's a powerful pacy winger. He will add to the department in the wide areas.
"We've got Martin Devaney who is injured at the moment and we've got Rohan Ricketts who is a different type of wide player. Jamal has got more pace and we needed that."
Southend turned down a £250,000 offer from Barnsley weeks ago but, with the deadline for transfers fast approaching, accepted a reduced fee.

If true you can understand fans wondering what is going on; particularly as come deadline day we didn't actually buy any player. RM is clearly a successful businessman but, again if this is true, (it comes from a Barnsley site) it is hard to understand how something that is worth more than 250k one week is worth 75k less a few weeks later.

Obviously much of what we read is speculative BUT it certainly looks like JCR went for less than an offer we recently turned down.

I knew JCR was going weeks ago, apparently he didn't like the favoritism shown by Tilly to some of the squad.

Like with him when he didn't provide a Championship goal or assist for us in 2006? He made 40 starts and 5 sub appearances last season in the league alone (prize for anyone who can tell me who the one he missed was against) as well as 8 (I believe all) in the cups. How can he be upset by favouritism?

£175,000 can be worth more than £250,000.

If we were originally offered £50,000 up front plus £50,000 after 100 appearances, £50,000 after 20 goals, £50,000 due at the end of his three year contract and £50,000 if Barnsley made the premier$hite or £175,000 straight up, which offer would you accept?

At the end of the day, like Tilly would say, its all speculation.

Well, if that story is true then it portrays us as being very desparate to offload him and get some cash in. It's all very well people saying we made a profit on him, but think of how much we must have lost on Paynter and it probably puts us in arrears. (Signed for £200,000, sold for undisclosed sum, i'd be amazed if Swindon paid over 50k for him)

I wouldn't get too upset over a percieved reduction in the transfer fee we finally agreed with Barnsley as the phrase "is thought to be £175,000" actually means "I don't know so I'm going to guess".

Unless the club announces what the fee was (and perhaps not even then), this is only ever going to be guesswork on the part of fans and media alike.

Whatever the final fee, if it is anywhere in the ball park of the figures that both Barnsley and Southend were talking about publicly, this represents a reasonable bit of business for a player who clearly had no further interest in playing for us since we got relegated last year.

It'll be interesting to see who he signs for next year after the Tykes themselves are relegated.

I don't think you can read too much into the transfer fee as I don't think that football in the real World works like Football Manager where you get one big fat payment and then head straight to the 'Player Search' screen to buy a replacement. As discussed last week, Nicky Bailey's £175k reported fee was only actually a £31k fee with the remainder presumably dependent on his and our success and the amount of time that he's here. Does anyone believe we actually spent more than a fraction of the supposed £200k that Billy Paynter apparently 'cost' us?!

Either way, we weren't in much of a position to reject a reduced fee for Jamal considering that he wanted out, that he wasn't going to sign a new contract and that we would have been lucky to get half of that in January.

Paynter was signed for the same fee that he was sold for: the undisclosed fee.

I'd be genuinely shocked if we paid anywhere near as much as £200,000 to Hull. Do you lot believe government spending figures? Football transfer fees are just as exaggerated. Transfer fees are also normally structured and Paynter won't have played enough to trigger any instalments. And as I keep on pointing out, the major expense isn't transfer fees its wages. I expect we paid more in wages (despite the fact that he was out on loan for part of last season) than we lost in transfer fees for Paynter.

By getting rid of Bradbury, Paynter and JCR we dumped a load of salary, this is what allowed us to get in Leon Clarke on loan.

JCR.. Barnsley!! fk off.. it full of northerners they will hate me..
Agent.. Just kiss the badge son, its pays the bills and we will be off next August!
JCR.. smooch snog smooch
