Ever read Harry Potter?
Two closely related questions there....

Oi! I never used uxorious!! Quixotic and pyrrhic, I will concede, but not uxorious...

Who is your best mate in football?
Do you like fishing?
Have you ever killed and eaten an animal?

Whoa - that one came out of left field!

Jay - do you see the current Al-Qaeda terror campaign as a simple Islamic counter-strike against Western globalisation, or do you see it instead as a deeper-rooted form of Islamist totalitarianism based on nihilistic neo-fascist roots?

Q. Jay how do you feel that you are being watched week in week out by a rather short man who looks like Harry Potter!

Not doubting you ability as a wordsmith, but you must surely realise that a good writer knows how to write for his audience. Surely such exuberant use of our fine language is lost (at best) on the average football supporter. If, on the other hand, you wish to maintain your Wordsworth approach to football programme writing, should you not, at least, provide a glossary of sorts at the back?

Perhaps this glossary could take the place of the team line-ups?

Your point is a good one - but unfortunately it is based on the quite incorrect premise that I'm a "good writer"...

I do occasionally use the odd florid word. But is it wrong for me to want to use as much of this wonderful language of ours as possible in my articles? Sod dumbing down, how about sharpening up?

I've restricted myself to one new word for my readers this week: ersatz.

MtS - programme writer and vocabulary zealot!

Tilly didn't sign him in the end

I don't think anyone's 100% sure, but probably because Tilly didn't think he would fit into the squad.
