I've said it before and i'll say it again, Flavs haters,

Not being able to get on the board in the daytime I was cheered having got in from work 40 minutes ago to read the headline on the back of the Echo and slightly less cheered to see that the deed hasn't been done yet.

For all your love of him Wigster I think the plain facts are easy to see. As a shotstopper he is almost unsurpassable in this division. As a commander of his back four, an organiser of walls, a martial of his defence at corners and his continued inability to dominate his box and come for crosses he is barely average. Not helped by the shortest back four since Snow White entered a team 70 years back but there's no hiding the inevitable. We can do better than Flavs.

The simple fact is that those we have selected over the last few seasons haven't been good enough to dislodge him. Whether the new guy is the answer only time will tell and we should all be big enough (no pun intended) to come back in a few months and compare him to Flavs, but a tall domineering keeper and the confidence that instills in the rest of the team could just turn those one goal defeats into draws and draws into wins.

The very title of this thread is wrong. I don't know many, if any, people, who HATE having Flahavan in the side. He has achieved a lot, but we should always be looking to improve. A shot stopper AND a commanding presence in the box - what's wrong with trying to get a keeper like that?

I swear if we bought Iker Casillas or Gigi Buffon and dropped Flahavan to the bech wiggy would still moan.

he should move on to better and greater things, but not just yet.
He better hurry up then, he's not getting any younger.

I don't think anyone here 'hates' flavs, in fact I would say he is/was one of my favourite Southend players. Unfortunatly (unlike you) people can see through this nice persona and work ethic and see that he isn't that great in goal. Hes the type of goalie that would look great if you saw him on the TV for a game but throughout seasons it is clear to see that shotstopping is his only strong attribute his weakest being the fact that he is chained to the post. Goodbye to Flavs and good luck but life moves on...

Sometimes, i really don't understand the darryl bashing on here. Please remember he has played some of the most important games in the clubs history, and for me personally, gave me my best day supporting southend, against Man Utd. I think he is being treated rather unfairly, and he is a passionate fella, who would come back to a club you were released from? Darrly will go down as one the best, and most legendary keepers at this club.

It is not a case of being a daryl basher it is a case of wanting to see southend push forward as a club!
He is plain and simply not tall enough or commanding enough to play at this level anymore. he just simply cannot get away with it any longer ie last two seasons have shown.
If you think Flavs gave you the best day supporting southend then the other 10 players playing that day clearly you have forgotten about!
It is hard for keepers at this level becuase they are not the FULL package but to be honest i think we can do better than daryl in a Full package style keeper, even if it means weakening his shot stopping slightly!

sometimes a player means more to a club than people realise -

there is something about Flahaven that is special - remember the two penalty saves .....

probabley all about budgets/wages and all that but sometimes its the spirit that a player has that really counts -

definitely something wrong about this .... but perhaps Darryl will take his gifts elsewhere and the people on here who really enjoy slagging off our players will only get to eat heir words when he makes a success of what will be the best years of a keepers career -

Good luck Darryl - you certainly deserve better than to be subjected to the
insults, cheap jokes and derision of the people who are only really happy when given the opportunity to pull some-one down ......

Of course i will agree he's not the best in the world as i along with everyone else cringe as the high balls come in. However this is Southend cheap skate united and quite honestly Flavs is one of 4 that you should be trying to keep. Mildenhall maybe ok but can't see the Championship clubs queing up tbh. Therefore why are we taking in yet another inferior keeper, is it the testimonial situation that is worrying car dealer Ron?

Aren't you kind of blowing your own argument there? If the championship clubs were queueing up we wouldn't stand a chance of getting Mildenhall. There are championship clubs interested in Darryl.

As you admit he isn't perfect - if he was we wouldn't have had him so long - but he has been one of the best keeper's we've had in my time watching Southend play. In my opinion it goes 1.Royce 2.Sansome 3.Flahaven. Others would rate them differently and that's fine that's their opinion.

As for people taking the p*ss out of his height, that doesn't mean they don't like him or appreciate his acheivements here. I take the p*ss out of my mates and vice versa doesn't mean we don't appreciate each other.

Times change, football moves on.

If you love someone you have to let them go ;)

bet Darryls delighted to get away - hes going to be at a good sized CCC club on better wages and won't have to put up with a load of second hand jokes about his height -

personally I am gutted -

lets not forget some of the jokes about flavs height are just to wind people up, many that have joked do not really hate darryl, he got a young family and will prob get better wages at palace, I have never heard anyone throw abuse at darryl at roots hall btw

for all those who went to rushden a couple of seasons ago for the ldv will know that jokes are jokes and not some vague attempt at insulting him. at rushden we spent more time calling darrly fat and short than watching the match and darryl was laughing and going allong with it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, with the exception of Kuipers at Brighton had we had any other goalkeeper(s) in our team last season (Collis is included in this) we would probably have won automatic promotion. Flophardon cost us at least the 8 points we would have needed to win outrights last season, and saved us approximately 0.

Good riddance to Wiggy's Sex Dwarf.

By the way Wiggy I am gorgeous and do not have a beer gut. Add to that if you want I'll post a pic of my bum on here for you as it is far far better than your hero's ar$e.

I have been a big fan of Flavs over the years and think he has certainly single handedly won us some games.

Tell me about it!

As an opposition fan I obviously don't get to see your players as often as you do, but Flahavan has always been consistently excellent against us, and produced one of the best goalkeeping performances I have seen in recent years in the game at our place in 2005/06.

Always looked a talent, and I reckon on his showings against us most Pools fans would swap him for most keepers we have had in the last decade. But as I say, us oppo fans only get the highlights; you see the full show warts and all.

I'm disappointed to see Flavs go but wish him well. He certainly is in the top 4 keepers for me along with Sansome, Roycey and Cawston.
Frankly going to Palace is not so silly as it first seems as he will push Speroni. I don't think in Darryl's mind he's going to sit on the bench and count the money. He'll think he can be the number one and i think he may do it.
To all those who criticise him - well you don't know a great deal about football I'm afraid.
Good luck Flavs. Thanks for the memories.

We shall see about that won't we. If he go's to palace makes the first team and becomes one of the most celebrated goalies in palaces history then fair play to him.

But what is more realistic is that being at palace he will be under even more public scrutiny about his height as soon as he doesn't come for the first cross than he is on here or in the stands at roots hall.

It is not a case of knowing nothing about football, it is a case, as i have already said in this post, he is not commanding enough, gives away too many goals from crosses and simply has become comfortable in the team as alot of players have done over the last couple of years.

Interesting.

A few years back when we played Northampton in the LDV at their place (Pettefer scorcher), I was writing a match report so paid more attention than usual to the opposition. I noted that Williamson was Northampton's best player that day yet when I mentioned this on a Northampton forum, I don't think one person agreed with me.

A year or two later and he's playing Premiership football (albeit it bad Premiership football) for Watford. Sometimes you just can't see the woods for the trees when looking at your own players.

In spite of this, I still think that if you make him average at both shot stopping and claiming crosses he would earn us more than he would lose. I'd be happy to keep him as there were other, bigger problems with our team last season but there's also a risk of him stagnating. I guess with Maher and Gower gone, that's the old guard out of the club so this may influence his decision.

I think Flavs biggest strength is one on one, he nearly always makes the save.. but in this league with our current centre backs we need a big commanding keeper to defend set pieces and long balls into the box .. Clarke n Barrat are good at making the last ditch tackles, they arnt as good in the air.. Thus we need a big guy between the sticks..

Flavs is a good keeper, he has his failings , of course , why else is he at Southend. Personally I feel that the defensive frailties of the last 2 seasons are being addressed and the next area on Tilly's improvement is between the sticks. Tilly appears to have got a keeper in who can do a season or two in slowing down the rate of goals conceded whilst looking out for the next good youngster or maybe will will have a good keeper coming towards the end of his career every couple of years, Didn't do Donny any harm
