Has this season been a failure for you?

So, I think we can safely say we are not making the play-off's this season now.

But, with the fallback of a Wembley final appearance (regardless of the result) has this made things easier to swallow for you?

Do you think all things considered, that this season has been a failure?

Or are you happy with how it has panned out?

The way things are the 7th of April will only be an appearance and nothing more

Yes, anything less than the play-offs at the start of the season would have been a failure IMO.

Wembley will make it a bit easier to take the poor league performance though, but would have preferred promotion.

Season not finished yet so too soon to say for me. We could win a cup final at Wembley and still make play off's (mathematical chance only really) or lose in the final and finish in the bottom half so until all over too close to call really.

Wembley is papering over the cracks of what is turning out to be a very poor season.

Last season Sturrock said if he didn't achieve promotion he would have failed. His words. So for the club to have gone backwards the following season, I think even he would admit that he has again failed.

We are 6 points off the playoffs, we still have 21 points to play for, we have seen in this league bottom teams can turn over the top teams, we have 3 games until Wembley, if we can get 4 points from those takes us to 59 points, if results go our way we could be only a 3/4 points off the playoffs, then after wembley we have Bristol (H) Aldershot (a) york (a) & a massive home game with Morcambe to finish it off, 4 winable games imo with Wembley out of the way takes us to 71 points, we need a before xmas type run of games, hard but not impossible!

We need other results to go our way big time, but it is still do-able, are the lads gonna be able to take those points, at the moment you'd say no, but we did win at Port Vale when it looked like we was gonna get a hiding, it over until the fat lady sings & shes warming up ,but as long as theres a chance there is a will to sing my heart out & give my full support to every player in blue to achive what looks mission impossible!!

Wembley cup finals, form goes out of the window, its 11 v 11, winner takes all, a bit of luck maybe, it how players react to that, the cup final will be a different Southend attitude to the one we are seeing now, im sure

I'm saying probably a yes. Only probably because

a) we can still mathematically reach the play offs, even though it's unlikely

b) I don't know what's gone on behind the scenes. Are we in a position where we should be expecting play offs as a minimum (as many, myself included) on here believe(d) or are we actually in such deep **** that surviving, and finishing top half is an achievement?

it really depends on how you judge success. We're still here which is a big one. We'll miss the playoffs which is very very disappointing. We're in the first ever Wembley final which is great. We'll probably lose but that's not that important to me. Overall an above average season in the 50 odd years supporting this club. Not the best by any means, but definitely not the worst.

I would prefer to wait till season's end to decide.

Our season ended last night Ken.

At least we're going to Wembley but I voted "failure" without any hesitation. The league is the only important competition. Anyone who thinks we can still make the top 7 is living in dreamland! We'd need to win all but one (if not all!) of our remaining games and how are we going to do that? We've not put in any kind of home performance since Chesterfield several months ago (and we've just taken one point out of nine vs three of the bottom four!). Whatever you guys are on can I have some?!

........and I could still be the Pope! :winking:

It's been filled mate , it was in all the papers.
It will be ages before the job comes up again , so if you're looking for a career change , then I would look elsewhere if I were you.

On the issue of our season , I read somewhere on SZ this week , that we needed to win 7 of our remaining 8 games.
Well , all we've done is get the one loss out of the way early.
Nothing's changed !

It feels a failure, but a top half finish and a Wembley final ranks as one of the better seasons in my 17-18 years as a Shrimper.

In my first ten years of properly supporting us (94-2004) I saw us finish in the top half once (2001 I think, 12th). So I am probably not as angry as most people at finishing outside the play-offs.

Haha I tried to be optimistic but I didn't even believe myself when I was writing it :'(

I admire shrimpercj and your fighting spirit. I'm afraid it's been completely knocked out of me over the last three games. There is something very wrong at the moment...........reckon there are plenty of things going on behind the scenes, that we know nothing about. In that situation I can't even begin to see us turning our form completely around..........even if that was enough...........which I don't think it will be. Wouldn't be surprised to see 75 points or more being required for the play-offs this season.
I've just done a calculation based on recent form and I've got 4th, 5th and 6th place all on 74points. The one that could well drop out is Rotherham, who could struggle to get 70 points. Sadly, Oxford look far more likely to overhall them and don't discount a late run by Bradford..................but US? I just don't see it.
