Whether the remarks made by PB are right or wrong, wise or unwise, is it beyond doubt that the essence of what he has said is correct? It comes across to me like the poor players who bemoan fans negative comments when substandard performances are produced. Just when are we allowed to comment on/criticise players without having to take into account their fragile sensitivities?

I know football is far from the 'mans game' it once was but do they have to live up to the namby-pamby rep that is afforded to them by so many in these modern times?

Quite frankly the players need to grow a pair and get on with their job to a standard that is above criticism.

Usually agree with you, but this is nonsense. Calling your players names in public is pointless and stupid.

Read Slipperduke's Excellent Piece in Today's Mirror and then draw the parallels.

Thing is fans complain when managers dont do it. So many times people have said in the past Tilson or Sturrock came out with the normal post match excuses and werent critical enough of the team.

They cant win sometimes.

Think it can be done now and again to an extent, but when the manager is doing it in a way that absolves him completely from responsibility then thats a problem.

The buck stops with the manager, his team, his players, PB does not understand L2 and is trying to play championship football with L1 & L2 players. Also makes substitutions at the wrong time, but lets publicly blast the players, as he did at Hull, in y opinion we have an over the top management structure for a L2 club.

I agree it is a well penned article but it forgets one important point. Di Canio won our division with his management. Ok so it does not work with overpayed and pampered Premiership players but it has a track record at our level.

The majority of mangers do not employ the methods used by PB but in the same token the majority of managers only taste mediocrity each season and the nice guys get relegated too.

If the consensus is that PB was wrong then sobeit. I will not argue for or against but I hope that the same level of blame is also directed toward the players because they are not blameless.

I think the majority on here support the fact that the players look fit and when on song are playing a more attractive brand of football than in many previous seasons. Clearly PB has not got it all wrong. Maybe we should see if his management skills improve/progress along with the players performances and results. He is still learning too and maybe, just maybe, he will surprise us all.

My only concern over Phil Brown is the way he conducts himself in public. He was given the last 9 games from the previous season to determine what the quality of the players playing was. Notwithstanding their status, Assombalomba, Tomlin, Clohessy, Creswell, Mohsni, Harris, Reeves and Mkandawire etc who would walk into any L1 or Championship side chose to leave rather than stay. The players he has signed for the current campaign suits his style of play which in simple terms as I see it is getting the ball down and using a high tempo style; this may be good for L1 or the Championship. For the first 3 League matches and the first half of the remainder we do look a quality side but what we do not have is a Plan B to be utilised in the second half. Most sides come to terms with the way we play and adjust their formation and tactics in the second half. Browns tactics is to hold what we have, a goal ahead or to keep the score to a draw; this is great for teams with an abundance of quality which is not the case in L2, in our league the best form of defence is attack surely?
Far too often Player Power resorts in the Management Team being relieved of their positions and unless Brown gets the players on his side quickly and playing with confidence; he will be history at Southend. Again, for me, the players appear to be fitter but are playing to his style; the players he has signed are expected to play his way. The tactics are his, the substitutions are his so why is it always the players who carry the can when it goes wrong. It is not that his position during match days is in the stand – he is pitch side with his assistant in the stands offering advice. So why is he not giving the players more guidance? Criticising their performance only makes them play without confidence. I sit in the East Red by the away dugout and watch how they adjust to the way we play, it isn’t rocket science!!!! I have been a Southend fan since October 1961 through thin and thin and always look at the positive side of all matches both home and away. But since March of this year I can honestly say that I am not enjoying watching the Blues play.
So Mr Brown, take the responsibility for players, team selection, tactics, substitutions and accept responsibility when you get it wrong or the team we are playing are just better than us, because if you do not, I cannot see you at Roots Hall for much longer.

A great first post from someone who's been 'lurking' for some years. Welcome John.

Di Canio won our division with the eye-watering budget - one that was in excess of some Championship clubs' budget - the Swindon board gave him to achieve promotion.

I sometimes chat with Swindon fans on another site. The hatred they had for PDC was eye watering from the first week of his appointment. Makes comments on here about PB sound almost nice!

“We were naive and like a bunch of children out there making wrong decisions. We’ve thrown away two valuable points and if these players don’t learn soon then we’ll have to change them.”

How exactly??

I suppose he could be saying, if the experienced players keep playing like kids, he might aswell pick the kids (and educate them) ??

Possibly, he did say he was impressed with some of the kids in the recent behind-closed-door friendlies.

If this is how we do with the experienced pros I hate to think what would happen if we put too many kids out.

I wasn't impressed by Brown's appointment and in particular the timing. As far as I can see he has so far failed in his targets and objectives. Yes he has an embargo to deal with but so had previous managers and they just got on with it. Brown is a show pony, I can not see what he hopes to gain by belittling the players in Public. First he says he has no characters, then he labels them children. Does Brown really think the players will bust a gut for him ?

Team selection has been puzzling to say the least, his substitutions seem to be just for the sake of it.I have a bad feeling
about Friday, Bristol Rovers have yet to pick up a point away and Matt Harrold will be out to prove another point. Following on from Friday three really tough games.

Have horrible feeling that after this run of games we will be much closer to the Conference than League 1.

Cant argue with most of that.

Not sure his team selections have been particularly puzzling though, not seen much wrong in most of them. Only gripe I had was dropping Corr, but with his fitness and a couple of dodgy performances wasnt massively shocked.

Who do you think shouldnt have been playing and who should have in their place?

2 weeks ago straker had a shocker from the start to the 73rd minute when he was subbed. He tried his best, but had a shocker. That's not a lack of character from straker, it's lack of managerial nous from brown

On Saturday bury made a double sub at half time and it probably went a long way to them getting a point. Wake up and look in the mirror mr brown
