This was the question that Steve Clarridge posed on the League review program last night.Suprised nobody's mentioned it but then the show does go out pretty late at night.
Personally I don't think so but I'd be interested to hear what other Zoners think.

Freddy is Freddy and Barney is Barney, I think they are two different types of player, would love to see them play together :sherlock:

We all knew that if Barney got a pre-season behind him and stayed injury free we might start to see a bit more consistency with him. Low and behold we have, long may the goal scoring prowess continue. Much to my surprise he has been scoring goals of all types, cracking curling 20 yarder yesterday, followed by a poachers tap in he's also managed to bag a couple of headers in the process also.

With regard to Barney & Freddy, simply no comparison. As above, two different players, two different styles. Not quite sure if they would have complimented each other, but hopefully once Freddy comes back in the Jan transfer window we might find out!

Very much Freddy Eastwood-esque goals yesterday. A longe range effort and a poachers tap in. Without Lee we'd be seriously struggling!

I've been saying it almost since we signed him, Lee Barnard is arguably the most natural finisher at this level. He is an out and out goal scorer, and given the service and fitness he would be more than capable of notching 25-30 goals in a season.

He is not comparable to Freddy Eastwood - He is a natural goalscorer, Freddy was not IMO. Freddy was a far more talented footballer, but scored a lot of his goal through his own work, trickery or flight of foot, he was very rarely around to score the goals your typical 'fox in the box' would score.

Barney is not going to beat 3 men and unleash an unstoppable drive into the top corner from 25 yards, but when the ball is in an around the penalty area, he is likely to score goals.

In any case, Lee Barnard deserves to be mentioned in his own right, and not compared with Freddy Eastwood.

Well put.

They are two very different players. I don't think there's doubting that Freddy was (is) and exceptional player and indeed on a completely different level to Barnard in terms of ability. But Barnard is, and is now proving to be, a very good goal scorer in league one - long may it continue!

Out of interest, what value would you put on Barnard?

Not often we see one of our players at the top of the scoring charts! Joint top scorer in the country right now.

Scorers

Him and Freddy are completely different players, the prospect of the two of them together for us at this level would be amazing. Nice to have someone on the top scorers list again.

The difference between the two is that Barney usually relies on service for hes goals, at times Freddy could make something out of nothing and win a game on hes own. Barnard does seem to be making a name for himself now though. January could be interesting.

What I've been pondering is, should Barnard stay fit and get say; 30+ goals, although unlikely I know. Would you rather have a Lee Barnard that scores 30 goals or a Freddy Eastwood that scores 20 goals?

Lee is just such a natural goalscorer. He doesn't always score goals of real quality, only this saturday and Brighton away last year come to mind as goals of serious class. But he does the hard work and is always in the right place at the right time.

No matter how good a player is, if they get 20+ goals a season they will attract attention from bigger teams.

Would love to see Freddy back, but strangely I feel it's more important we keep Barnard.

Another question for you, would you swap the two right now? A Barnard in form, or cult hero Freddy.

Spot on.

Barnard deserves the praise he is getting, and I think its unfair that people like Claridge are comparing him to Eastwood. Two completely different players, and the top two scores during Tilson's reign.

Also, Claridge said that Southend have had a bit of a lull in League One last couple of years. Is he ****ed? Reached the play-offs two seasons ago, and last season we narrowly missed out. What a prat!

Claridge knows f-all and this comparison sums him up.

Different players totally but still both excellent in their own way. I've been one of Barny's biggest knockers (last season) as his lack of fitness was/were/is very frustrating but he's proving himself this term and his first goal looked even better on the box.

If you read between the lines of that statement, I think you will find that Claridge is saying we are good team who maybe should be in the Championship. He never said we were punching above our weight did he.

Tough one tbh. I think i'd have to opt for Freddy though. He is/was/always will be a legend.
