Tonights Echo has an interview with Gower, who, amongst other things, says the following:

"The atmosphere was just inspiring" he said. "There were more than 11000 supporters and I've never played in front of such a noisy crowd."

"I know it's a bit of a cliche, but the fans really were trying to suck the ball into the net for us when we were pushing for an equaliser. They definitely played a big, big part in our fightback."

So, to the people who thought the atmosphere was poor on Tuesday, take note. The players didn't think so. I suggest you clean your ears out.

I think it was the subs really got the crowd going again, as soon as Hooper came on the first thing he did was make a two footed tackle that cut out a Norwich attack and straight away the crowd came alive again.

I think we should thank Lee Croft.

Is there a club in the land that sustains that sort of atmosphere for 90 minutes?

It's always a bit of chicken and egg...

At 3-1 down the crowd was most definitely subdued (and why wouldn't it be, Norwich were playing us off the park?). When the third goal went in, I put my head in my hands more to steel myself from the senseless abuse that would shortly emanate from certain members of the South Upper than anything else.

Rather than the support changing the outcome of the game, I think it was the substitutions - and particularly young Mr Harrold. For me it was their impact on the game which inspired the crowd, rather than vice versa.

With the crowd now buoyed by some more positive football, Hammell's excellent free-kick fired things up even further until, as Gower rightly says, the crowd were practically ******* the ball in.

Thing is though, from being 3-1 down, it took something special to happen on the pitch for the crowd to come back to life (in my opinion). I suspect it wouldn't have done otherwise.

Egg and chicken.

Prodigal son has good point, I been to more football matches than i could possibly remember and I have never heard a ninety minute wall of noise, some great nights etc. We did need something to spark us off and that free kick on tuesday done just that, the place just went mental and the norwich fans knew it and did not try and compete for a good five/ten minutes.

Experienced the Kop, so Liverpool for one. A bit closer to home - Last year all three Brentford stands were continuously rocking (the score helped im sure) and Swansea despite us lot being deafening were continually loud themselves.

I will always remember the support at swansea they were one of the most vocal home supports i ever heard (i been to 47 grounds in my time west brom be 48) and stood on the kop many years ago but still not continuous for ninety minutes, sometimes you just have to catch your breath.

On the subject of the free-kick, it just gets better every time I watch it. If you look at where it hits the net, it's virtually rising as it goes in. Considering the range that was from and how he had to get it over the wall and down quickly, it really was something special. Definitely the best free kick I've seen at the Hall, possibly ever.

He made the free-kick look so easy too, when it really did take exceptional technique.

The wall was never back ten yards either. Seven at most.

Only one other springs to mind and that was Ronnie Whelan, when he was still playing and not turning our club into a holiday camp

Freddie hit a decent one at Chesterfield last year (not that that was at The Hall of course

)

On the subject of noise. I couldn't believe a) I was sitting in Roots Hall on Tuesday. That was easily the best we've supported the boys at home WHEN WE'VE BEEN BEHIND.
The substitutions came at a time in the match when people were beginning to stir, having just had the handball incident, but I think it was Harrold's first involvement that made people actually think there was something worth shouting for.
We got a corner at 2-3 and you would actually think we were 20 seconds from winning the league again, such was the hysteria around me. It was great that people actually realised they might have a part to play in lifting the team.

and I couldn't believe b) there was a thread on here the next day that started off `we're so quiet/outsung again'. Not knocking the person who said it, he heard what he heard I suppose, but I think that shows how bad the acoustics are at Roots Hall. For the amount they brought, I didn't think Norwich were particularly loud.

I'm pretty sure the acoustics are shocking at Roots Hall. I'm not sure I've heard a South Upper chant from my seat in the East Yellows. All I ever notice is clapping in a vaguley coordinated manner that leads me to think there must be some chanting going on!

One thing is for certain, the acoustics at the hall are appalling. This get said time and time again but ill say it again, if we ever get a ‘new stadium go ahead’ please please please employ the people that designed the Liberty stadium!

As much as it pains me to say it - I havent heard a louder away support than Norwich.
Where there you go, sort of proves my point. I was in Block S of the West, just by the family stand fence and I couldn't really here much from them apart from a couple of renditions of `On The Ball' and `Yellows' (which older fans will remember is a colour that can be bellowed to good effect, unlike blue, or green or red and definitely not white!)

No doubt if you were standing in the middle of the North Bank it would have felt like the Rio Carnival in there and they all wondered why Southend had so many mute fans who stood and clapped and waved their arms about but never actually sang anything.
