Echo News 'I'm ready to step up' - Walker aims to make big impact for Blues

Keen to make an impact - Southend United striker Josh Walker (Image: Ross Johnston)

By Chris PhillipsChief sports reporter.

JOSH Walker insists he is ready to step up for Southend United.

The Shrimpers seem short of firepower following the departure of top scorer Bim Pepple.

But Walker is eager to prove otherwise and wants to start hitting the back of the net on a more regular basis.

“It’s been tough so far and I think we’ve found it hard to create chances,” said Walker.

“But we’ll get there and I’m ready to step up and score some goals.”

Walker has scored three goals in 21 games so far this season.

And he remains frustrated to have had an effort controversially ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Owen Evans during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Barnet.

“It was annoying the way the whole day went really,” said Walker.

“We conceded from two set pieces and my goal should never have been disallowed either.

“It was clearly not a foul and I was confused at the time.

“I wasn’t really even near the goalkeeper so I didn’t know what had happened or why it was disallowed.”

The defeat kept Blues 14th in the National League standings.

But Walker is refusing to get too downbeat.

“We’ve lost two in 10 and they were both against clubs high up the table who are doing well,” said Walker.

“It’s tough but we can’t dwell on the past.

“We have to look forward to Saturday now and show a big reaction.”

Dagenham sit two places and one point below the Shrimpers ahead of this weekend’s clash.

And Walker is looking forward to facing another of his former teams.

“I haven’t been back since I left so it will be good and hopefully I can get on the score-sheet,” said Walker.

“I enjoyed it there and I have nothing but good things to say about Dagenham.

“I had a good time, I did well there and got myself a move so I’m looking forward to Saturday.”

I'm not sure this will pan out. Josh had a great scoring record at D&R, but since then at Burton, Gillingham and Southend, absolute rubbish. I don't even think he suits our way of playing. He's hardly had a shot a game since he's been here. He's a penalty box scorer, feeding off scraps, rebounds and low crosses. Probably why D&R suited him. What I like about him is he's a real tryer, certainly never downs tools. Hence he gets clapped off most of the time when being subbed. Maybe he will get more goalscoring opportunities when the new centre forward comes in. He certainly won't be getting them from our sidewards passing midfield or wide men who tend to cross a high ball.

I think there is a better player in there than what we have seen but whether he can refind that ability is another question. Busy and quick but, bad decisions, too late releasing a ball and minimal end product. Flatter to deceive or will click and come good. Who knows?

I think nearly a full team of eleven over the past nearly 6 months have gone to press claiming how they are going to do the equivalent of stepping up. Maybe the club and the Echo might need to hold some of this stuff back as its starting to look farcical

Kev has so many positives about him and like the rest of us a few faults, Its not all down to him when the player steps on to the pitch. Hes not always right when he says it but he was within his right to mention players need to take a bit more individual responsibility, especially after that Barnet display

Must be tough at times for Chris Phillips though who of course needs to sustain the good relationship he has with the club .There were a few times with Ronnie Rat when the press were banned

However Chris must work on a one in ten methodology. Such as getting out around 9 articles from players saying how well they/we a as a team are going to do, followed by his brilliant one in ten moments when he risks writing an excellent, powerful, and detailed critique !

Walker was superb Saturday, he realised he's getting naff all of the ball.up top, so tracked back well. It's a shame as I think if we played more into the opponents box he had the loom of a fox in the box player

Walker was good for the first 20 minutes or so last weekend, other than that, he's done little so far imho. He's another I really want to do well, and was pleased when he signed, but he's not clicked. Not even one of our two first choice strikers currently for me.
