If you were Jonny Wilkinson..

Got to say I'm glad that my work doesn't consist entirely of waving, being polite and making small talk. I'd find it too brain-numbingly boring and depressing.

Anyway I need to get back to my own very important and intellectually satisfying work of searching through 11 lever-arches full of correspondence and copying every item with a certain name in it.

I'm not going to get in to a huge debate over the merits of the Royals but to say she never did a day's work in her life is a bit harsh. Surely that depends on your definition of work.

She didn't do a days work in the conventional sense as most of us do by doind a 9 til 5. But as Queen of the country during the war and married to a bit of a duffer (even by royal standards )it can be argued she did a lot of good work supporting her husband and for the country in very trying times. Not to mention the boost to tourism and her endless work for charities.

I just think it is very easy to say that it's my money paying for there houses meals etc etc but at the end of the day I'd rather the money was spent on them and something that other countries envy(as Matt rightly pointed out given the choice a country on the other side of the globe CHOSE to keep them as their head of state) than a bunch of snivelling wretched dishonest politicians.
Yeah, but I've been to Australia - not the brightest bunch on the planet I can tell you!

Winning the World Cup then meeting the Queen(GOd Bless 'er!) would be amazing. I'd go and be extremely proud!
Oh that's a good one! Name one footballer with strongly held political beliefs?!?!?!

Thought so.

I'd go and be extremely proud!!!!!
Johan Cruyff.

Didn't he refuse to play in the world cup in Argentina because he disagreed with the Military Junta?

Wearing posh frocks and attending lavish charity banquets is not doing work for charity. Neither is posing for a photo opportunity with an aids victim.

It might bring the cause of the charity to public awareness but it could never be called work.

Work is busting a gut in a factory for 50 hours a week so you can pay the mortgage and put some food on the table.

True, but who is going to dig deep in their pockets to donate when Joe Nobody, the car worker from Swansea is heading up a charity? Its also worth remembering that Princess Di posed for a photo for the charity she was the patron for. Own publicity or not, it raised substanial funds and helped highlight the plight of AIDS sufferers even more.

People are too quick to knock the royals without thinking what they do for this country. If you really want to rip into hypacrites, then turn you attention to our government of the last 6 years. Promises, promises, promises. End result? Nothing.

I am a mixed bag, I believe we need to keep them as our Tourism trade is built on them, however i believe they are bad examples and do not do enough esp Charlie and his younger Brothers !

Diana, Overhyped and her funeral what a load of overhyped cr*p. Would a miner get that or a poor sod who gets trapped in a fire or saved someones life.

The Royals may support charities but they get paid very hansomly for there time and get lavish accomidation.

The only one i have true and utter respect for and a person i would love to meet and in my eyes should be Queen, is HRH the Duchess of Kent.

Oh and further more Mr Blanket what a complete and utter to**er he is. Along with Mr Blair and half of the Cabinat. Only one i have a ounce of respect for is Gordon Brown. Lib dems have a scot in charge nuff said (Bring back Ashdown a man who i believed should be Prime Minister and would have been superb. And Tories well i wouldn't trust them a inch. Politics is a joke in this country.

However would i accept a medal from the Queen, Yes as its the British Empire that is giving it too me not the PERSON.

Mixed bag? Mixed up more like it. Our tourism trade is built on hundreds of years worth of history. Much of which is due to having a monach. Countries discovered, wars fought, an empire built in the name of The king or Queen. Oh and try looking at the royal engagements list to discover just how much HRH Prince Charles really does. I think you might find that he is the busiest royal by a long way. Prince Andrew earns a wage from the Royal Navy while still carrying out royal engagements and Prince Edward owns his own company. Both do not recieve any payment anymore from the royal list. HRH Prince Michael of Kent lives rent free and still recieves payment as does his wife. Neither do as much as the Queens sons so get your facts straight.

Of course a miner would not get a state funeral but then nor would anyone else outside of royalty anywhere else in the world. And where was the hype? The woman had been killed in a road crash, do you think it was a publicity stunt or something. For someone who used to quote Winston Churchill am surprised you aren't jumping up and down about him being given a state funeral, or is that ok for him and not for her.

Politics in this country is democratic in as we, the common man, has the right to vote for who we wish to goven the country. Also, anyone can stand for election. That is a right that hundreds of thousands have died for. If you can do better then stand as an independant or form your own party. As for Paddy Ashdown, take a detailed look at just what his party has achieved. They cant even stand on their own as several Lib/Lab pacts have proved over the years. And Ashdown was responsible for a least two of those wonderful get-togethers. At least the tories have always gone it alone.

Somehow, I doubt if you will ever recieve an honour from the British Empire, Luke. They dont give out MBE's for murdering the English Language.

I would attend the meeting with the Royal family reluctantly for such a situation. I dont particulary like the royal family, but for the sake of the team I'd attend.

Also, if a professional sports player in any sport was invited to an audience with the Queen with the National team, I dont think anyone would get away with not attending as they would be letting down the team.

And, from my viewpoint rightly so!
So lets get this right - an important member of the England football team, just before the European Championships, pulls out of a function with the Queen at Buck House because of his strongly held political beliefs. He is neither rude or offensive to anyone, he merely politely declines the invitation.

You would drop this (vital) player from the squad and jeopardise the teams chances because of this? Bearing in mind he hasn't broken any laws or hurt anyone, merely exercised his rights in a democratic and free country.
Yes, they would have snubbed the head of the Country they are supposed to be representing. Its not about the queen as a person, its about her being the representation of Britain and believing in your Country, something we Brits are not very good at.

I am not a great Royalist, but I do think they are good for tourism and some members (the Queen, Prince Charles) of the Royal family do a very good job promoting British industry abroad.

There is good and bad in everything and so far I would much rather have the Queen then any other alternative available to us at present. And if so many Aussies despise the Queen why is she still their Queen!! Especially after the referendum on the matter only a few years ago.

I would like one of our anti constitutional monarchy friends came up with a system that would appeal to me. Instead of presenting the same tired old tosh all of them seem to come up with. Why exactly would having a President who gets all his housing and every need paid for by the tax payer for being just a figure head be a better option than the status quo?? Do you really think Presidents actually do anything really political?? Of course not that is what their advisers are for!!

So yes I would go to Buck House and meet her why not, I have heard she is a great tipster when it comes to the horses.

Nope , our Australian government is footing the bill for Harry's little holiday...security included !

I would meet the queen, even if she is of german/greek stock. I would infrom her that as a pagan follwer I believe in the divine right of God and that as a consequence every 7 years the monarch should be sent to the pyre as the sun~king sacrifice. Unless of course she/he were the victor in a great battle in which case the warrior king could reign for 19 years before the great fire rite!
Blessed Be

The Royal family are great for the tourism industry. They are always skiing, playing golf and sailing arounf the med.

Charles whilst i agree does alot i.e Princes Trust. I still don't think he does nearly enough that he could and nor do i feel he is a good example.

As for HRH Prince Michael of Kent, both her and husband are quite frankly Wasters.

Andrew and Eddy do sod all but pounce off there mum or use there connections or title to gain.

Our Tourism trade is indeed built on thousands of years of history, something America can only dream off and they have to nick ours (U571 Hollywood for you) However Buckingham Palace is one of the most popular tourism landmarks why because it houses the most famous Royal family in the world. I wasn't saying the Lib Dems were particually brilliant but i was saying Ashdown would have made a great prime minster.

Winston Churchill, Well he did not fight the war himself however he was brilliant for morale and sprites and could have easily agreed peace with Hitler, bout fought on. He deserved what he got, and i think you will find the people had turned out were saying Thank You to the man, not crying over over someone they had seen on the Tele a few times.
