Purely a hypothetical dilemma, as I'm resigned to the fact I'll never be a part of any World Cup winning team at any sport, but if I were in the egg-chasing squad would I have gone to meet the Queen?

As a staunch anti-royalist I have a strong dislike for her, her family and what they represent. I could never accept any honour from her as an individual, again it will never happen so not a major problem, but as part of a team representing England would I swallow that pride and go along with it?

Imagine the uproar if one of the squad today had pulled out of going to Buckingham Palace on such a principle, imagine the headlines in the papers.

I still don't think I could stand there, shake hands with her and be polite - it would just stick in my throat too much.

What does everyone else reckon, like I said it's purely hypothetical but interesting to consider nonetheless.

I would never go.

The Royal family are just scoring easy points by 'honouring' a team wich has captured the publics imagination. It made me sick to see Harry poncing about with the team after they won the cup, no doubt accompanied by a couple of bodyguards at the taxpayers expense.

I would tell them to f**k off and if that upset the legions of morons who bought Royal wedding tea-towells and spent millions of pounds on flowers that were left to rot after Diana died then so be it.

Obviously in the minority here - but I'd go and be f**king proud....

Depite never having sworn allegiance to your queen i would still go along and meet her.

I don't think you would get the choice, not if you valued your career in whatever sport it was. Snubbing an event like that would get you dropped quicker than the proverbial hot potato.

And, from my viewpoint rightly so!

So lets get this right - an important member of the England football team, just before the European Championships, pulls out of a function with the Queen at Buck House because of his strongly held political beliefs. He is neither rude or offensive to anyone, he merely politely declines the invitation.

You would drop this (vital) player from the squad and jeopardise the teams chances because of this? Bearing in mind he hasn't broken any laws or hurt anyone, merely exercised his rights in a democratic and free country.

I would be honoured to meet the Queen but I would never go and meet that opportunistic scumbag Blair! If anyone could be accused of trying to cash in on their success it's him! He's so low he even tried to muscle in on Queen Mother's funeral.
And another thing, he's a sweaty so what's an English triumph got to do with him!

I don't have any particularly strong views on the monarchy, I'm not a staunch monarchist and I can't think of any better alternative (does anyone really want a president Blair or even a president Gareth Gates?).

However there is one decisive factor for me in this - the Queen (like our rugby team) rules over Australia. Many Australians resent this and winding up Australians is one of life's great pleasures, so a meeting with their Queen to celebrate beating one of their sports' teams should send them mad.

Altogether now.....
The Aussies love the English, you might find it quite strange
'Cos we sent them all down under, with only balls and chains
And when they see the English, they always shout and scream
But when they had the chance to vote they voted for the Queen!

And there are plenty more of those available on request.... ah happy days.

Winning the World Cup then meeting the Queen(GOd Bless 'er!) would be amazing. I'd go and be extremely proud!
Oh that's a good one! Name one footballer with strongly held political beliefs?!?!?!

Thought so.

I'd go and be extremely proud!!!!!

Yes. If they are being ambassadors for the country, then YES, they should respect the queen....

Then, they when they are dropped and not being an ambassador, they can then show their true feelings.

They're not all brain dead morons obsessed with money, cars and copping off with page three girls. OK, most of them are - but not all.

I personally wouldn't go, but I respect the opinion of others who say they would. I certainly don't think however that someone should be dropped from the team (of any sport) if they chose not to. However the kind of mob rule encouraged by certain tabloid newspapers and many of their readers would probably prevail - sadly!

Not a good move politically for Tony Blair the whole Queen Mother episode, I have to agree.

Trying to get in on the act of the funeral of a dotty old aristocrat who never did a days work in her life yet lived in opulent luxury at the expense of the taxpayers didn't exactly win my vote!

I'm not going to get in to a huge debate over the merits of the Royals but to say she never did a day's work in her life is a bit harsh. Surely that depends on your definition of work.

She didn't do a days work in the conventional sense as most of us do by doind a 9 til 5. But as Queen of the country during the war and married to a bit of a duffer (even by royal standards )it can be argued she did a lot of good work supporting her husband and for the country in very trying times. Not to mention the boost to tourism and her endless work for charities.

I just think it is very easy to say that it's my money paying for there houses meals etc etc but at the end of the day I'd rather the money was spent on them and something that other countries envy(as Matt rightly pointed out given the choice a country on the other side of the globe CHOSE to keep them as their head of state) than a bunch of snivelling wretched dishonest politicians.
