....that Ian Wright had a trial with us a couple of years before joining Palace - guess we really missed the boat there eh.
Ian Wright came to professional football relatively late. Despite having had trials at Southend United and Brighton during his teens, he was unable to attract sufficient interest to win a professional contract offer. Reverting to playing for amateur and non-league teams, he was left disillusioned about his chances of a career as a professional footballer, and looked set to pursue a job as a full-time plasterer.
We can add him to the list of the other players we've turned down in their early years then. We've got quite a few haven't we. :'(

Bruce Rioch and John Fashanu two that spring immediately to mind.
In terms of Wright, I remember hearing rumours about eight or nine years ago, as he was making his way down the leagues and joining the likes of Forest and Burnley, that we tried to sign him.
Bobby Zamora , Came with his mate and we took his mate......
The legend that is David McSweeney
I think you will find it was Tom McDonald, that brilliant full back.
A splendid yawnfest of a thread this is
To clarify the Zamora thing, we offered him terms but at the time he was mixing with the wrong crowd and his mates were getting into drugs and crime ... he decided he needed a complete new start so he went to Bristol Rovers instead
Oh, and as for Wright .. he didn't sign for Palace till he was 26 i believe, so a good many years after his failed trial
Sorry if this p!sses on the chips of everyone that is in the mood for a good old fashioned bit of club slating this morning
Don't be such a misery :p

I don't see people slating the club; merely pointing out the 'ones that got away'. That happens all the time in football. Alex Ferguson not signing up David Platt being a great example.

Man who rattled your cage. If this thread is such a yawnfest then why post? And Wright signed professional forms with Palace at the age of 22, not 26.
