Simple poll to gauge fans opinions on our style of play this past season as PS insists we do not play Hoofball.

Over to the Zoners.

We have done this to death. Direct ball to a big target man, knock down and lay off to the wings or support players, ball in the box from the wings. Not hoofball, its a direct form of play which got us 83 points, a hell of a lot of assists from Hall, lots of goals for Hall, Dickinson and Mohsni. Second highest scorers in the division. Cant be too bad.

Agreed dave, but when it doesn't work it can be horrid.

I am fine with it as long as it carry's on bringing good results. But we do have the players to mix it up and play more football so this should be encouraged and employed against the right sides.

I do agree. We have played some good passing football at times this season and have ripped a couple of clubs apart. Mixing it up is definitely what we need to be doing

Well said. It's a style that so nearly got us up. There are some football "snobs" on here who are not coming next season because of it, oh well never mind. As I have said before we aint Barcelona and Arsenal fans aren't entirely happy with their brand of play considering what they've won over the last few years.

We are supporters which menas we support.

Can't believe this keeps coming up, considering PS has explained the approach many times.

It got us 83 points, a shed load of goals and an amazing away record.

We know when it doesn't work it looks ugly, but at least he has a plan and sticks to it.

We are supporters so we want the best for our club and from our club. Unless you are in the relatively small percentage of the support that goes to most of the away games (and I believe you are) then there has been precious little entertainment on offer this season. It has fluctuated between dross and average with a small number of good performances standing out like a sore thumb. Supporters do not have to be apologists for unacceptable performances, they do not have to make excuses for bewildering tactics and they certainly don't have be supportive of a "style" that was nearly successful, especially when that style was so clearly ill-suited to the personnel at his disposal after Dicko was unavailable.

But unfortunately it failed.

Ah, hindsight, must have caught that off Wiggy. One more point gained by us or lost by other teams above us and we would not be having this conversation. Even Sturrock's detractors would admit 83 points should have been enough to go up.

HB do you enjoy watching this particular style of football?

I've only see us play a handful of times this season and can't get excited by it. I accepted it to get us out of league 2 and the reality now is another season of league 2 and this direct style, so I understand and appreciate the frustrations.

Would you rather us play intricate football all the time, not score as many goals and finish 12th?

The style isn't the greatest but we are the 2nd top scorers in the division. I would accept different styles of play, not so appealing to the eye if it gets the ball in the back of the net, because after all, the ball hitting the back of the net is what makes you jump off your seat cheering.

To be honest I can't remember many games in my 45 years of watching Southend where I have come away thinking that the style of football was entertaining
Yet the games generally have been

Irrespective of all thoughts and comments we still didn't get promoted.

Crewe fans' comments "Top of the League and you ****ed it up " Very true unfortunately.

We play both hoofball and long ball, but having said that, I've seen evidence of it on the tv the last week or so too, including yesterday. We're not alone.

but did we fail because of the tactics, or because of other factors? There are so many things that could be blamed for us losing a point that it's unfair to say that the tactics failed purely because we didn't go up.

Hoofball, long ball, direct football, route one. Call it what you like, it's semantics. Direct football sounds good - hoofball is a pejorative term for the same thing. A rose by any other name .........

What I do know is that in under 4 months these tactics took us from top of the league to play offs to failed playoffs in turn. What I do know is that you have tactics and players; the successful manager adapts tactics to players which he has signally failed to do throughout our decline.
