First Game

At home to AFC Bournemouth Saturday 21st March 1997 - 1998, 5 - 3 Home win, Boere(2) Thomson(2) Clarke, Attendance 4,823.

How very Naive of me to think it would be like that every week.

I was 7 or 8. It was the best moment of my life at that point.

I saw my first game when my father took me to the Kursaal when I was six years of age. It would have been the boxing day fixture against Exeter 1933 which we won 3-1. A repeat scoreline this Saturday will do nicely.
My grandfather used to take my father to the original Roots Hall and I in turn took my son to the current ground so it is very much a family thing.

I think we have a winner. Great to hear sir, I am sure that our resident historian Dad of Dave the Shrimper and the rest of us would love to hear more stories from those days.

My first game was on Halloween night, 1980. I imagine it was my old man's idea of a treat, rather than a trick. We beat Stockport 2-0. I went to a few more games that year, including the title clincher against Rochdale. Just like everyone else who went to Roots Hall during the 1980/81 season, I never saw the Blues lose.

To qualify that mate, we actually lost to Hereford in the FA Cup 0-1, probably the week after your debut.

When i was about 12, my uncle started taking my cousin & me to watch Southend, 91-92 season. My cousin & I had family memebership tickets for the west stand, so it's fair to say it's thanks to family & family based promotions that I started watching the mighty blues.

9 years old - first game was a Friday in October 1970 , lost 2-0 at home to Crewe , a certain Stanley Bowles in their line-up !

Same for me, altho 30 years or so apart, went with uncle and cousin when I was 10. Southampton, lost 4-2, the last time they were in this league I believe.

I can't say for certain, but I believe I was bout 7 or 8 when my Dad took me to my first game (1963/64).

I remember standing on the South Bank, but could not quite reach any of the "leaning bars".

Blimey, there's some old gits on this board. ;):whistling: It's been discussed a few times here what a great season 1968/69 was.

Confirmed me for life!!!

I hope to be there tomorrow; at the back of block W, with both my boys, one of whom is now a seaso and follows away a bit as well, the other is now being slowly converted from following a certain premier team from the Manchester area by being brought along to experience the passion of a real bread and butter club that you can watch every week and feel part of.
When you start at an early age you truly know that when you sing 'Southend, 'til I die' you mean it, no other club could ever come close.

My first game was for my 11th birthday in January 1996. Beat Portsmouth 2-1, which took us exceedingly close to the Championship play off positions.

It's been an interesting 14 years it has to be said............
