Hartlepools View on game!

Good question - is a punch in the face actually a foul? Any refs on here?

Not a foul as such; play was already stopped. Possibly an act of violent conduct which I didn't see as I must have been looking at a different part of the melee. Macca did go down very easily against Walsall and he may well have done so again.

Turner on Sky sports last night said the official was wrong in not sending off Scannell for their penalty as it was identical to our one?

What a numpty. Robinson was clean through, and tried to stay on his feet, and if he had would of had a 5 yard tap in to an empty net. (You could not get a clearer goal scoring opportunity). The red was harsh, but sadly under the laws of the game the ref had no choice.

The Hartlepool penalty, the player was going away from goal, and had at least one covering defender in between the ball and the goal, and besides that it shows on the replay it was a clear dive from a tiny little bit of body contact from Scannell.

I think this is all sour grapes as 11 vs 11 we were by far the batter side in the opening 20 minutes and could (and should) have been out of sight.

I do admit that they should of had a penalty for Sankofa's handball.

Tbh mate I dont think we need a ref to back up whether punching someone in the face is violent conduct...
I was not referring to whether a punch in the face is violent conduct, I know that! I was unsure if violent conduct was a straight red card, that's what I wanted to confirm.
Maybe I didnt make that clear enough.

The two penalties had nothing in common whatsoever and any attempt to suggest otherwise is clutching at straws.

Scannell's challenge was a penalty. He leant into the back of the opponent having been encouraged to do so by the referee not giving a far more vigorous challenge in the back a minute or two earlier.

Mr Russell is a referee I have a lot of time for but I don't think he was at his best last night. A lot of messy (and ultimately fruitless) consultations with his Assistants and allowing a number of poor challenges to go unpunished. To his credit he likes to keep play going, but there are some matches and some teams where that approach simply doesn't work and last night's match became difficult to referee towards the end. So for me, not a bad performance but not great either.

Didn't think Scannel's incident was a penalty anyway. Since when has a shoulder barge been a foul?

--since players throw themselves to the floor after the slightest contact in the box?

I think Granty invites people to tackle him constantly as he doesn't release that ball 'till the last second, also when someone dives when he tackles them Granty goes down with them! Very astute and clever stuff and is required to succeed in the modern game unfortunately.
As for Macca, well he'll go down if he's been clattered earlier by the same player for sure. It's better than the Macca of old that would've steamed in for retribution!

Before they scored their 2 we should have been out of sight. They were no where near "wipping the floor" with us in the second half. All they did was a big, long ball to the left mid with Francis literally having to play RB and CB.

Agreed Grant has the street-wise cunning that we so sorely missed in the Championship (along with a commanding centre half and keeper).

"Well in thirty years of football, I have never seen such a disgraceful display from a man in the middle of a football pitch," Turner told Pools World.

"All the major decisions went against us - I'm stood 75 yards away and everybody can see that the ball hit the defender on the hand and the linesman is 15 yards away and he can't put his flag up for a penalty.

"I have never ever blamed an offical for anything during my career but tonight I thought that was disgraceful."

I hope he gets fined for saying that and it will make the result a bit more sweeter:).

Don't understand why the ref suddenly ran over to the west stand lino and then the east stand lino, can't remember what he done after that.
And Nardellio's (sp?) foul on Clarke two-footed from behind sending off and this apparent punch on macca another sending off. Bottled it I think the ref did!

I heard it was a racist comment by a Hartlepool player. I was speaking to my friend (who is a Barnsley fan) this morning and he says that Nardiello was amazing and that he never thought that he would have a temper on him. He should have been sent off IMO but because the ref saw it, it means that the FA can't change it.

If what you are referring to happened in the first half.

Grant was taken out by one of the Hartlepool players after the ball had long gone. Grant got up and jogged after the player and gave him and little nudge in the back and a word in his ear. The lino must have saw this and alerted the ref.

tbh they could have had monkhouse sent off for countless thugish fouls. constantly following the ref mouthing off and that bald guy threw an elbow at macca which went completely un-noticed.

descisions werent the best but they were lucky to leave the pitch with 10 men.

after we lost at hartelpool before Christmas I returned to work to find a number of gloating e-mails in my inbox from the ever-friendly locals.
none received this time round:D
the local rag on saturday was full of turner's whinges though this is the same paper that believes middlesbrough only fail to win every week due to bad refereeing organised by a southern conspiracy.
their goalie may have been harshly treated but it really only served to give hartelpool an excuse for defeat as the ref bottled several other potential second bookable/red card offences by them as he didn't want to send another one off.
