Red Rep King!
Turner Left Livid After Southend Display
Posted on: Fri 27 Mar 2009

Chris Turner was livid with the match officials after seeing his courageous Pools' side beaten 3-2 at Southend United.

Turner's men recovered from the shock of finding themselves two goals and a man down inside 16 minutes but could not find an equalising goal to take a deserved point.

And while the Pools' chief felt pride in his side's display, he was left furious with some of the decisions made by the officials,

"Well in thirty years of football, I have never seen such a disgraceful display from a man in the middle of a football pitch," Turner told Pools World.

"All the major decisions went against us - I'm stood 75 yards away and everybody can see that the ball hit the defender on the hand and the linesman is 15 yards away and he can't put his flag up for a penalty.

"When you see the one given against Michael Nelson at Cheltenham two weeks' ago, it's absolutely laughable and these people run this game of football."

But Turner was proud of his players' efforts - particularly in the second half when Pools dominated proceedings,

"We had to play 75 minutes with ten men against a team going for the play offs and we absolutely wiped the floor with them in the second half.

"I'm proud of the second half display and I think the fans who stayed til the end clapped the team off because they knew that we didn't get beat by Southend, we got beat by the official tonight.

"I have never ever blamed an offical for anything during my career but tonight I thought that was disgraceful."

Cant disagree with him really, blatant handball by Osei. However, the challenge on Clarke was a red card and I've seen much worse referees at Roots Hall.

If Turner wants to moan about that decision, then Monkhouses challenge on Grant (Pick any one of three!) should have seen him walk and Nelson's punch on McCormack should have seen 'Pools down to 8 men by then and probably shielding their area. So I'm glad it wasn't given just so the thugs don't prosper!

(Was a pen though and I was mighty relieved!)

Good decision to send off the keeper in the first half, clear cut goal-scoring oppurtunity and if he didn't take him down, he would've definately scored. Well done ref on that.
However...

The tackle near the end on Clarke deserved much more than a yellow card, how can that not be a red? I was in disbelief that he wasn't sent off. What happened with McCormack, I looked towards the ref whilst he was dealing with the tackle incident and noticed that McCormack was on the floor holding his head, did a player hit him or push him?

Not a good display from the officials, but definately NOT the worst we have ever seen and if Chris Turner thought that was a disgraceful display from an official, then believe me, we have seen far worse than this at Roots Hall in our last few seasons.

He punched him? :stunned:

That is a straight red card, no hesitation, no arguments I believe because that is classed as violent conduct (can a referee back this up please?)

We'd be saying the same had we had all the bad luck they did. But equally they created a great deal of their misgivings. The sending off was a bit harsh I felt but equally they were lucky to end with 10. The linesmen were both shocking but the ref just about got it right.

However his comment about them dominating second half is pure fantasy. Between 45 and 70 it was all us...

Tbh mate I dont think we need a ref to back up whether punching someone in the face is violent conduct...

Glad to see Turner come out and slate the penalty his team was awarded, the softest I'd seen at Roots Hall for a good 15 minutes.

Bloody assault surely? Didn't see it, was watching the stuff going on with Clarke. Sour grapes I reckon on Hartlepool's part, they were awful first half, Porter and Parker were anonymous - and the rest of the team were just a bunch of violent and undisciplined hoodlums.

Sankofa's was ball to hand for me. They deserved zero from the game and were lucky not to come away with a much bigger defeat. For Christ's sake they have only had 4 shots all night. How does that make them hard done by?

Hartlepool should really have had 3 men left on the field by the end of the game. Monkhouse took out Grant so many times it was laughable and the ref did nothing, Nelson swung at Macca, Porter was quilty of untold niggly fouls on Francis, Naridellos challenge on Macca was worthy of the death penatly.

Hartlepool are always grim northern *******s in my book. Season after soon it dosent matter who there manager is they are always filthy scum.

I think he has every right to be upset. Whether some of his team are thugs or not and obviously had a gameplan to clatter Grant I am getting sick and tired of the theatricals a few of our players. If you've been hit go down but don't act like it was a right hander from Mike Tyson. This doesn't apply to Grant. He is man enough to dust himself down and get on with the game.

Any one think that Wests inside knowledge of Macca , Grants and possibly Clarkes Temper would have led to a "get under their skin" instruction for the team ?

The Hartlepool pen was a definate, after giving us one for a soft challenge and a no option red card the ref was always going to even things up...

Didn't see the Macca "punch" but those around me who did said it was a red, but to be fair the ref was watching the melee , the East stand Lino was the one who should have been liiking but there was a lot going on

The worst was I think Nardiellos two footed slide at the back of Clarkeys legs after he had passed the ball, one of the dirtiest teams I have seen in a while, could have had another 2 players sent off

8 Southend 40 12 2 6 27 16 6 5 9 24 38 -3 61

16 Hartlepool 40 7 7 6 39 34 4 3 13 17 33 -11 43

Think that's all we need to know. They're there for a reason.
