One year in charge of SUFC on 5 July.

Suggest we all need to say this to the big Scotsman:

Absolutely. We had nothing at the start of last season except the threat of disappearing out of the league and yet we finished with some pride. And now we are all looking forward to a better season than we could have hoped for. THANKS LUGGY.:loyalsupporter:

Whatever sarcasm Clarence can muster in a sentence that doesn't include the basics of sentence construction (i.e. capital letter at the beginning and full stop at the end!), I'm sure those with genuine appreciation can make themselves far more evident in a thread such as this...so I echo SS's sentiments and say a massive thank you as well. Blimey, if Cricko can be optimistic then Sturrock must be doing something right!

Good grief - now I know where my dream last night about PS having a pint in The Cricketers with all the players turning up for last orders came from!

TSTBO, this man did a great job last season considering the awful state of affairs last July. Hats off to him and here's looking towards the new season. "I may not get (to many games) with you," but I have seeeeeeeeeeeen the promised land and it's got a funny looking stadium on it.

In this instance I'd say our good Captain Birdseye has a point, I'm still angry over the treatment meted out to Tilly (FWIW I'm still angry about how Dave Smith was treated by the club).

However from a starting position of having bugger all in the way of playing resources he built a team that could at least compete at this level. At the start of last season I reckon most of us would have taken 22nd as a final finishing place. He's bought in some promising young players and introduced some of our youth team players to the first team. His signings so far this summer look good, although IMO we need 2 or 3 more in.

Agree with the H man, though the only Dave Smith I know works a few desks behind me....:nope:

I still think we are genuinely lucky to have got PS in. An experienced manager, loads of contacts, good scouting network and players want to play for him.

Being more experienced, he understands (a little more perhaps!) about what is going on with the finances and knows he has to work inside them the best he can.

Has unearthed quality like Mohsni, Hall and Corr and whilst no manager is ever going to be perfect, he is doing a great job! Heres to another few years Paul and leading us into the 3-sided Ron-Dome!

Let's look beyond the hyperbole.

With a completely free hand, no baggage to inherit and a better than average wage bill at his disposal but admittedly not much time, he assembled a squad not quite good enough to keep us out of the bottom half of the bottom division, our lowest position for a long while. We also concluded the last third of the season with indisputably relegation form; not much pride there in my opinion.

Can't see what all the hero worship is about.

Having said that, I am encouraged by this season's signings and think there is a reasonable chance that he might actually earn the adoration and respect that he's getting already (unless the dead hand of our leader can throw another spanner in the works!).

Ha! Cheer up Mick!?

This time last year we had what was it? 2 registered players and a genuine threat of folding? As others have said, finishing 22nd looked like the best target we could wish for.

Admittedly the season tailed off, but I think the fact we went on a great run raised everyones hopes for at least a play-off place - when that passed and the season was effectively 'dead' for the last few months, it was inneviatable that the players would drop off the pace (rightly or wrongly) and we petered out into mid-table obscurity.

But those players not deemed good enough are now gone (think everyone about agrees with who was cut adrift) and they have been replaced with what is seemingly superb quality.

If you cannot credit PS for any of that then its a bit sad.

I agree to a point but that is all. I feel some are overdoing the adoration a tad, but under PS there seems to be a steadying of the ship and a genuine feel good factor is emerging. I am not suggesting that I agreed with his every decision last season but then I am not the manager and have not agreed with every decision of any manager in football. There is still clearly bitterness about the departure of Tilly on here, which is a shame. I wanted Tilly from the start and he still has the prospect of becoming a good manager but during his tenure with us his progress stagnated and I believe it was due to the lack of experience. For me, the dream ticket years ago and still now would have been Tilly as manager with a character like PS as Director of football so that ST could be nurtured and matured. ST made enough mistakes to warrant the chop. We dont have him now and I doubt my version of the dream ticket will ever materialise. In the absence of dreams I am more than happy with the reality that is PS, in the hope that this season will reap further progress. I will judge PS more when he leaves the job and his record is there to see. For now I would rather appreciate having a good manager, a club and a future.

It's not hero worship to say well done for a good job. As canvey said, I would have taken 22nd at the start of the season given all the events of last summer, 13th was a remarkable acheivement.

Well done PS.

I love this forum - some people just want things to appear bad, so that they can argue, battle attack the Club. Woe betide anyone that wishes to look at the positives at the moment.

As someone said, just because you wish someone a happy anniversary, does not mean that they want to heroworship PS. But if anyone thinks that we cant at least look at the plus points compared to 12 months ago really are missing the point !

I ended my comments with a (rare?) positive. I've said before I think Sturrock Snr did a decent job, but I wouldn't go further than that. Hopefully this coming season he and the players will do a better job. He has raised expectations with most of his pre-season activity so far and thirteenth will be a failure, so credit for that.

I am just pleased that we are still here and yes he has done a good job and put a fairly decent side out last season. I am encouraged by the signings so far and as ever am looking forward to next season. Especially so as my 6 year old boy has decided that he no longer wants to support Chelsea and is coming to his first game with me on August 6th
