Hand held speed cameras

...that the police hide in dark clothes on the side of the road pointing at cars.

Anyone know:

1) How far can they reach?

2) How reliable are they?

3) Are you still allowed speed limt + 10% + 2 mph?

No, I am ok, was driving home from football training and didn't even see him until I was 25feet away, and I was doing 35 in a 40, but it got me thinking how sneeky it is, cos he was out of view in totally dark clothes, so the following questions cropped up.

Was that the one in entrance to Cecil Jones, the biker PC.

I was doing just under 40 listening to the Mercury Awards being discussed on the radio.

I too thought it was rather sneaky so I gave him a little wave, and then turned my hazards on as I went past him.

Its is as simple as this......if you don't speed, you have nothing to worry about. Anyone bumping there gums about speed cameras, obviously break the speed limit and have a problem with being caught out!

Me and Kev also saw the same guy after training. We thought that if they are on a bike with the hand held and you are caught speeding they come after you to stop you or pull you over as they only measure speed and dont take a reg reading?

Em.

The problem I have is that at a glance they are just people in dark clothes pointing gun shaped objects at you!

One stepped out from behind a car about a year ago in an area of Essex I wasn't familiar with, never a good one for your nerves...

I'm a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator.

If anyone here has got a ticket let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Says the man who has previously been caught by camera and has learnt his lesson.

If I'm wrong, forgive me for the duff info!!!

agreed, I had one jump out from a bush at me when driving in Wigan... i **** a brick!

Think virtually everyone is guilty of heavy foot syndrome at some point. I remember being stuck behind a little old lady who chugged along a country road at 40mph when the limit was 60 and then went through a village at the same speed despite the limit dropping to 30.

Yes I have been caught in the past for speeding and received points for it, although no one on this web site or indeed any other web site was aware of that until now, so your info is certainly suspect mate.

The point i was making is how can anyone moan about getting caught, getting fines and receiving points. We all know the rules and speed limits. I have a very bad habit of speeding on quiet country roads as there is a lot of them around this part of the world and if I get caught then so be it, it would be nothing more than I deserved.

Good news!!

Who is moaning about getting caught?

I think the moaning was about the sneakiness used by the police.

For me it is the hypocrisy of the Police in insisting that speed traps are used to help drive down incidents at accident black spots, whereas in reality these type of traps the police use covert methods, such as wearing all black and hiding in the shadows, I have even some police wearing a High Vis top hiding behind a bush and pointing the speed camera through the bush.

If the Authorities can use Variable speed limits to drive speeds down at certain times why do they not use them to allow roads to have increased speed limits when the conditions allow?

In the case in question this was occurring on a clearway dual carriageway @ 10.20pm with sparse traffic on it.

I hate it when the police are sneaky, and catch people breaking the law. They should have told those naughty terrorists who were convicted yesterday that they were being monitered.....

Don't speed, don't get caught, can't complain.

and yes, I've been caught. More than once...

;)
