Ground Capacities

That's a big if - they're unlikely to be in the same division as us, after all!

Regarding the statement from the club that most of this season's games are likely to be sellouts at Roots Hall, how much of this is down to Tilson, Brush and the squad and how much of this is down to Uncle Ron's charisma?

Yes, if we are doing badly, those attendances will plummet... but how many will stick with the club because of Uncle Ron and what he is trying to achieve? I will bet, quite a fair number.

If we can average 14000-16000 in the new ground in our first season, this will be terrific. Bearing in mind that we averaged 8000 last year in league one and could average feasibly 10000 this season in the Championship, these are not unrealistic numbers.

One negative which HAS TO BE ADDRESSED is the transport infrastructure!!! I suspect that the club will be forced to have a "Park & Ride" scheme for matchdays, because otherwise the locals will be up in arms about congestion on the roads.

nice to hear all those fans who said all Ron wanted to run the club into the ground so it folded and he had 2 development sites and no football club mucking things up coming on here and saying, "sorry chaps I was wrong". Still pigs might fly I siuppose.

Mind you they'll be tapping away shortly telling us that nothing's changed, the grounds still not been built, wake up and smell the coffee and Ray Parlour's about to sign.

Martin states that 'We will be sold out for most of our games this year'. Well we are looking at about a 9,000 crowd for Saturdays game I hope the crowds will pick up a bit after the holiday season.

No 10,000 isnt unrealistic this year
.
You have to remember though that last years attendance is over inflated due to the promotion, remember we were only getting 5,500 at the beginning.

The fact we are in a high profile league has helped us with record seaon tickets and an average of 9 -10,000 will certainly happen.

A new stadium would generate more interest so could add a few thousand further.

My question is always going to be what happens if we struggle and attendances fall next season back down to 6 or 7,000.

I hope we can get the council to agree the proposal asap whilst we are still on a high as Im sure they are capable of being a royal pain in the backside. And as you say transport etc is going to be a big stumbling block.

We have London of course, closer than an hour and half.

Plus the mighty Col******r are building an 11,000 capacity stadium which will overshadow ours. Ahem.
Get it right its 10K capacity

Pathetic but true I am afraid, the way Col******r itself is growing that is far too small.
It can be extended up to 17K but I will probably be in my grave before that happens, bloody councils!

Yeah, seems unlikely.

It's almost impossible to be the owner of a football club and get anything close to the unequivocal support that players and managers can get.

To be honest, since he has come to the club, it seems he has done everything right. Brought in a sense of professionalism, applied man-management and recruitment techniques from business to football and lent his excellent judge of character where possible without interfering on a football level. To have the balls to appoint an unproven Tilson based on his judgement of the guy was exceptional and inspired.

SITP
Ron Martin's #1 fan, apparently.

As a former employee of Mr Martins...i have to say I am surprised and delighted at the way he has conducted himself and the business of the club.

48,300   SUNDERLAND
40,204   LEEDS
39,859   SHEFFIELD WED
33,597   DERBY
32,551   SOUTHAMPTON
32,500   COVENTRY
32,500   LEICESTER
30,300   IPSWICH
30.009   BIRMINGHAM
28,525   WOLVES
28,384   STOKE
28,000   WEST BROM
26,400   CRYSTAL PALACE
25,500   NORWICH
25,404   HULL
23,186   BARNSLEY
22,546   BURNLEY
21,412   PRESTON
20,134   PLYMOUTH
19,148   QPR
19,000   CARDIFF
12,306   SOUTHEND
 9,975  LUTON
 7,556 COL EWE

As we know our capacity is overestimated by about a 1,000 but clearly so is Col Ewes.

In view of our proposed new 22,000 stadium we would still be 18th in the list, goes to show what big clubs are in this league.

22,000 might be small compared to some of them but I think we would all settle for that.
After one home game for each team, top and bottom crowds are:

SUNDERLAND 26668
IPSWICH 25413
NORWICH 24676

SOUTHEND 8971
LUTON 8131
COL EWE 4627

Although Sunderland was highest they still had 45% of their ground empty.

Col******r have taken just the one game to significantly beat the record low crowd for the whole of last season.

I bet they beat that record even more this season and get down to around 3000 crowds

... although the only time it came close to doing so was against Liverpool in the FA Cup in 1979. The best average at Roots Hall was during the 1958/59 season, although 11,229 still only represents less than a third of the assumed capacity of the ground. Whilst impressive, I always thought that the ground was far too big for the club. The club had its aspirations (and a massive tip of the hat to Sid Broomfield for his efforts) but public support has never quite managed to reward efforts to drag the club into the next era. And I fear that the same may happen to the new stadium; build it too big - and the club suffers a demise in form - and you run the risk of a sub-5,000 crowd rattling around in a 28,000 capacity stadium. Darlington anyone? Sure, one can hold the opinion that if they build it, they will come. But for how long? If the Shrimpers fall back into the lower echelons, would they still come? Let's have ambition, of course. But let's also have caution ...

And despite my caution above, that would, of course, be a fantastic achievement. It would also be a new 'best ever' for the club; currently 12,089 in 1949/50 ...
