Good Players, But Not Fan Favourites?

Eh? Peter Butler complemented Dave Martin superbly - both were excellent players for this football club.

Martin - yes, good player.

Butler. You mean the midfielder that couldn't pass accurately, cross a ball, shoot, mistimed his tackles, but ran about a lot? IMO (as I say) very overrated.

Everyone liked Leo Roget didnt they...

Yes, I think he was the opposite of what is asked in this poll. Roget was a big fans favourate at the time, mainly due to coming through the ranks and the dross that played alongside him. This meant that when his standards dropped/he got sent of needlessly/mucked up etc he was still loved by the fans.

Scott Forbes is also the opposite of what is asked in this poll. Forbesy was the architypal fans favourate.....run his heart out, worked tirelessly and was very popular with the fans (3rd in player of year poll?) despite his limited ability. Fair play to him for that as he made the most of his ability and I certainly loved him at the time as he was one of the few that cared. However my perception is that both Forbes and Roget are / were more popular then my nomination for this accolade......

The biggest case of "good player, never fans" favourate has to be Kevin Maher. He was a bit poor when he first came, and everyone was always surprised when his contracts were renewed. However, in any interviews with other players when asked who the best player at the club is, they would always say Kevin Maher. He has won two promotions as captain, got to two cup finals, been player of the year twice, is instrumental in our teams style of play, we look half the side without him and he is approaching his testimonial. Never heard of any discontent by Maher when it comes to seeking a move or stalling on a contract offer......but still everytime he plays the occassional loose pass the morons around me in the East delight in the refrain of F"£k Off Maher you useless "insert appropriate expletive".

Maher has never been a fans favourate, but this club would ahve been a lot worse off without him.

Keith Jones is also a good shout, but at the time he played alongside players like Angell, Collymore Otto, so he didnt attract as much attention as those.

On the flip side, players who's reputation amongst fans was far better than their on pitch performances deserved.....Nicky Nic, Neil Jenkins, oh and Tes Bramble.

Agree that Maher is respected by most fans but not loved and cheered in the same way as other players he's played alongside. The fact we dont really have a song for him despite his loyalty over the years is testiment in itself.

Also how someone can say Leo Roget is beyond me. He was adored by the Roots Hall faithful and I'll never forget his extra time free kick in the cup late one tuesday night to send Helen Chamberlain's Torquay out the competition. Train drivers were on strike at the time and I missed the last train home coz of the extra time.

Steve Tilson anyone ?
Again always played alongside players who attracted the limelight more and were favourites. But not sure he was ever anybodies favourite.

oooh my god I new this would come up, for all of you who have seen the goal, I can't honestly think you really believe his miss conrol was him laying the ball off???

bunch of jokers.......

I have to agree there , it was Miss-control to let the ball run through to Leon.

I think the fact that 'touch' was in inverted commas signifies that Rayleigh Boy didn't really think that Harrold meant to set up Clarke. Perhaps the humour of the 'bunch of jokers' here is a bit too subtle for some.

Harrold's 'pass' to Clarke may have been unintentional but his flick over the defender's head just prior to that was sublime.

Maher, Gower, Constantine definatly come into this as does Nicky Nicolau imo. Jay Smith aswell as when fit that lad was quality but never a fans favourite

Nicolau was toilet!

Maher would definately fit in with this catergory. A Southend legend that never gets the praise he deserves amongst the fans on a match day. The only time I remember his name being sung was when he lifted the play-off trophy.
