GOATER !

weststander

Manager
Now I know that the Goat has had a couple of bad games. But the abuse he was getting from the West stand yesterday was appalling ! I sat in front of three blokes, not your usual grumpy gits, who spent the whole game slagging him off. Do these people really think that Goat got in the way of the goalbound shot on purpose ?? I've just had a look at Goats stats and you may or may not be aware but without his goals we'd be 8 points worse off and worrying about holding onto a playoff pace, let alone being 3 points clear at the top with only two games to go. Lay off the whole team they have worked wonders this year and deserve nothing but praise and our UNCONDITIONAL support .

We will never know my friend, we will never know!

Maybe we "wont no", but we DO know that abusing a player is unlikely to improve things. Ah, but it does make people feel better. That's alright then, isn't it?

Everytime we lose a game certain people blame Goater.

I thought he did alright Saturday to be honest. Id prefer to see Bradbury up front as I think he would link up well with Eastwood, but Ive not got a problem seeing Goater start.

I just can't believe there are still people in the West Stand who have a go at Goater because he hasn't got much pace. They seem to think he has to run as fast as Freddy to be any good, and aren't able to appreciate what qualities he does bring to the game!!

Wayne Gray may have the pace, but has shown nothing of the Goat's qualities in his recent appearances IMO.

Heard similar stuff in the East im affraid shouts off "get him off Tilly" when he miscontrolled once. I could take it if these same people ( you cant call them fans ) actually did anything positive during the course of a game , ive watched them they barely applaud even when the teams come out, but they'd be the first to moan that there was no atmosphere if everybody followed their lead and sat there in silence. I just cant comprehend it . I really fear the bad old days will be back one way or another next season and the old farts will be back in their element. Do we need them ?

Bradders is afraid to shoot. We need people who are not afraid to shoot....He's doing ok out wide, but as i said on another thread....stick Gray wide and then you can bring Bradders on for the Goat if necessary.

The Goat may be a legend but that doen't make him amune to a bit of stick and a kick up the backside from the paying punters like anybody else once in a while. Im sure his man enough to take it. Personally I thought his movement and overall contribution was well below what should have been expected yesterday. If I had been Gray or Lawson I would have been gutted about not getting on at half time. Tilly and Brush have done wonders for team moral but I do wonder if they are stretching it a bit when they expect two younger strikers to sit warming the bench for 75 minutes knowing that their managers opion of them is obviously no better than that is already out there struggling on the pitch.

Spot on. I had the misfortune to be sat in front of the most miserable family I have ever seen yesterday. They were constantly moaning about Goater, Bradbury and anyone else whose name they could remember throughout the whole game. The mother would shriek quite piercingly into my ear every time we lost the ball or had a shot at goal that missed the target, and the young lad would say the odd comment like "Freddy, don't give up" or "Give it to Gower", but so quietly that there was no way anyone out on the pitch would ever hear him. The funniest thing about them (if I had been in the mood to laugh) was they kept saying things like "We never put the ball on the deck" or "We always go backwards" just as the players were putting a few passes together or we were pushing upfield.

I really wanted us to score a goal just to shut the moaning minnies up for five minutes. It's not the sort of commentary I want to hear when we're not playing too well.

Gray's place is on the bench and Id never put him on in front of Bradbury, even on the right.

Bradbury has played well on the right and had another good game Saturday, and whilst I agree he does look nervous of shooting I reckon him and Eastwood would make a good partnership up front.

i sat near two of the most negative people i have ever met in the south upper. There were two kids of about ages 15 who constantly moaned. There were shouts of "eastwood you're having a mare!" (AFTER 10 MINUTES!!!

) and "southend you are $hit!". This is not what the players need to hear. GET BEHIND THE BLUES!!

Unfortunately that's what you get when the cling-on fans show up. They have very little respect for our club or players...but at least they have given a few quid towards the cause.

Agreed, up until yesterday I did not go along with the 'glory hunter' tag labled to fans that only turn up when we are doing well.  As you say I was quite happy that the club got some money out of them, but now I wish they had not bothered to go.

We have all been going on about the atmosphere at Roots Hall and I along with most of you on here thought the atmosphere at the ground would be 'electric'.  It became clear right from the start that it was as flat as a pancake. (this despite the unusually loud cheers that greeted every Southend players name when announced).

I was in the ground early for both the Gillingham and Doncaster games and it was quite obvious that quite a few people were attending their first ever game at Roots Hall or their first game for a very long time.  I have to say that after sitting near some of these new fans they offer very little vocal encouragement at all and as has been stated tend to make comments after the slightest bit of bad play.  It takes time to turn new fans into loyal supporters but it has killed the atmosphere at Roots Hall.

Thats why the atmosphere at Swansea I'm sure will be brilliant lets face it very few fans will be travelling 250 miles for their first ever Southend game (I'm sure there will be 1 though!).

Mmmm nice thought about response here, just f%&k off, we dont need idiots like you on here.

The Goat's been in the game long enough to know that as a seasoned pro, when he isn't on top form the fans are going to take it out on him rather than the others. In all he seems like he's had a good season like the majority of the squad must have done for you to be 3 points clear at the top. Maybe you wouldn't be where you are but for his influence on and off the pitch.

Shaun never had fantastic ability but for morale, you couldn't find a better bloke. And he plays to his strengths and doesn't try the fancy stuff. His unorthodoxy makes him look like Bambi-on-ice when it isn't going right but ultimately he scores goals.

He has been without one for a long time by his standards, I can't remember him going this long without bagging. He is due one and if he gets the winner in one of the next two games, which is very possible, then a few people on here might be changing their tune.

Wignall may also have us 15 points clear at the top and in the FA Cup final if he had been given more time, but I doubt it. It's all well and good coming up with hypothesis, but I'd rather stick to the facts.

some people where moaning about Bradders int he first 30 mins I thought he was doing pretty well at that stage.. Saturday was one of thosegames where the crowd felt we would never score.. One of those days when the ball just wont run.. Its football it happens.. Only at away games will the fans get really going it situations like that.. its the being 'away' mentality that helps the atmosphere.. this is true for all teams fans..
On the subject of goater, I though he did ok in the context of the game.. I'd start him at swansea no question..
Lawson comws on and scares the sh!t out of the full back once, twice maybe three times before they either suss him out or batter him.. Still best to be kept as a late impact player.. Gutts took some flack but he copped a few as well and kept trying.. maher booting the water bottles over at the end showed how pi$$ed off he was.. Maybe too many people turned up expecting a promotion party, instead of a match against a very useful Donny team..
Could make for a very exciting time next Saturday!
