GLOBAL WARMING

Forget global warming. I fly back to HK late Saturday afternoon arriving Sunday lunchtime. This is just in time for Super Typhoon Usagi forecast to be the biggest world storm of 2013 and currently projected as a direct hit on HK arriving Sunday. HK can largely cope with these but one of this magnitude will be interesting.

Good timing. Landed 1 hour back just I'm time for this looks like a shutdown day tomorrow to get over jetlag ha ha

http://news.yahoo.com/super-typhoon-usagi-path-destruction-063833155.html

Won't be as bad as what's currently hit Taiwan and Phillipines but still bad enough as a near direct hit to bea concern not least of which is the volume of rain predicted in next 24 hours. You wouldn't believe me if I told you how much

Whilst in Orlando a couple of weeks ago, i was told that if the 'Icecap' continues to **** at the predicted levels, then all of Florida will be underwater in 100 years time!.
At least Seaworld will be able to expand without any financial cost!

Sorry, but that is a ridiculous use of the 'swear' filter. What else is heated ice meant to do?!

disappear
disintegrate
evaporate
fade
heat
soften
thaw
vanish
warm
cook
deliquesce
diffuse
disperse
evanesce
flow
flux
fuse
go
merge
render
run
smelt
pass away
waste away

Tonight I shall be having deliquesced cheese on toast. :hilarious:

I think we should wait until later this week when a report is published. The report is expected to say that the likelihood of climate change being mostly down to us has risen from 90% to 95%.

Some people are going to have to buy some more sand for their heads.

Millions of people believe in Santa Claus and God . Doesnt make it true.....

So let me get this straight.... You are a rationalist. You understand the scientific method, you like your beliefs tried and tested, and you aren't going to have the wool pulled over your eyes by Fairy Stories about Jolly Fat Present-Givers in Red, or Deities watching your every move and Smiting you for your Evil Lifestyle.

Yet, even though 90+% of reputable, level headed (largely atheist) Scientists say that, having studied all the available evidence, discussed it at length and had their work extensively peer-reviewed, Climate Change is real, inevitable and there is a 95% chance of it being man-made, you aren't having the wool pulled over your eyes by any of this scientific crap either?

To be honest when it comes to climate change there is so much politics involved I dont know what to believe. Are those scientists writing reports endorsing it being funded more than scientists who want to disprove it ? If it is so conclusive why do some scientists still believe it isnt ?

As I have said earlier in the thread climate change will happen anyway. That is common sense and doesnt need any scientists.

Even if it is true that mankind's existence contributes to it Id love to hear what % of scientists believe we can maintain the planets temperature indefinitely.

Im completely up for being environmentally responsible to ensure our planet is as good a place to live on as possible, but anyone who thinks if we recycle our rubbish then the weather wont ever be different is deluded. I even remember people mentioning global warming after the Tsunami in 2003 or whenever it was.

I think the report is from the IPCC. If you read their web site I think you'll find that since this is a UN report it is apolitical, i.e. The US and China contribute towards it as well as countries on the other side of the argument. I think this is quite relevant:

Thousands of scientists from all over the world contribute to the work of the IPCC on a voluntary basis. Review is an essential part of the IPCC process, to ensure an objective and complete assessment of current information. IPCC aims to reflect a range of views and expertise. The Secretariat coordinates all the IPCC work and liaises with Governments. It is supported by WMO and UNEP and hosted at WMO headquarters in Geneva.

I don't think anyone can genuinely question their credentials.

This from The Independent is also interesting, although I think Lord Stern is a tad optimistic.

Ok I don't know much about this,Anyone explain why there are airport expansions which mean more flights which means more gasses into the atmosphere .
