Giving Up the Fags

Benfleet A1

Hector Of The House🦐
After much thought and endless ear ache from the wife and kids, I have decided to try and give up smoking. I will be getting some help from the doctor and I will be getting one of these E-cigarette things but would like some suggestions as to what one is worth purchasing. I'm not into ******* something that tastes of fruit and bad fruit at that and I don't want to be walking around with a pocket full of stuff just get a drag out of it, so suggestions people, save me.

I gave up cold turkey.

I asked myself that as an alpha male apex predator did I really want my life dictated by a plant?

In all seriousness I found the hardest time was after meals and when drinking.

Lay off the beers when giving up and find something else to do after meals such as going for a bike ride.

Forget patches, gum and e cigarettes, you are just delaying the pain.

Stick the money saved in a jar. Watching it grow is quite motivating.

Costs money, does no good and makes you smell like a damp bonfire. :omg:

I don't know what a packet of 20 costs - about £6 at a guess, so;

20 a day = £42 a week, £182 a month, £2,184 a year. HMRC says "Thank you!":headbang:

Change your routines, find other means to fill the time when you would have a cigarette out of habit. Instead of having one after a meal, then have a small treat, chewing gum or a mint or something. Definitely chew gum when driving if that was one of your times to smoke.

Biggest thing is really wanting to give up, however daft that sounds. I did a month of patches and then nothing, it worked for me. But I had to do it on my terms not when people were telling me to, i.e. my dad's birthday (so still easy to remember) and not mine.

I gave up three years ago with the help of patches (10 weeks free through the Tesco/government scheme) and encouragement from my partner but the best advice I can give is change your routine. The toughest times for me wasn't after meals or first thing in the morning it was, and still is, getting into the car and when gaming (which I hardly do any more)

The amazing thing is that now I don't smoke I can really smell the stink of others that do and I'm actually embarrassed to think that that is what I used to smell like to my friends. I'll even go out of my way to avoid those loitering outside a building having a quick puff. Not because of the passive smoking aspect of walking amongst them but because of the horrendous stench emanating from them and their cancer sticks.

Us ex-smokers are more pious than those who've never tried the evil weed.

I gave up, cold turkey, but didn't smoke that many a day an not for very long overall (8 years).

Ain't that the truth. My boss has never smoked in his life but is very lenient with those that do at our place. On the other hand, every single person I know who has given up have become the biggest pain in the arse ex-smoking nazi without exception. I fully expect to become the same if I manage to crack it.

When I gave up smoking I found how different a pint of bitter tasted ,and I could taste cheese for the first time in years .

I've never smoked, but I actually believe that anyone that works in an office and smokes should be paid less as they spend a fair proportion of their day smoking. Let's assume someone has 5-6 fags a day, and each one takes about 10 minutes to smoke (i.e. they're away from their desk and not being productive), that means they waste about an hour a day.

So when the same people give me dirty looks for taking an extra 15 minutes at lunch because I go to the gym, they can **** right off.

People give me funny looks when I come back from the gym because I wear muscle tops and baggy multicoloured bodybuilding trousers.

Day 1. Armed with a patch and one of those e-liquid vapor ******* things. So far the patch fell off 20 minutes after going on and the battery wouldn't charge up. Am now vapor puffing a strawberry flavour which to be fair isn't too terrible. No murderous thoughts just yet.

I gave up about 18 months ago after smoking for 35 years and even watching my mother die from emphysema and smoking related disease it still did not convince me. I was away on holiday cruising the Caribbean when I gave up and it was not planned. I just didn't feel like smoking and I was only doing 1-2 per day and thought this is silly and just stopped. You have to do this your own way and not for anyone else but for YOU.
I guess what I am trying to say is try not to plan too much as then everything focuses around that time and concept and then you spend the whole time thinking about it.
Go to your practice nurse and ask about them prescribing Champix.. I have had several friends use this very successfully as you can still smoke while taking the tablets. I don't how it works but it does.
So far I have not had another fag and at the moment I don't want one and I have noticed some things since I quit but on the odd occasions I do miss and then within a few minutes that goes - it really is about lifestyle change more than anything.
Good luck x

I tried to "give up" many many times , couldnt manage despite only being on 10 -12 a day.
once I succumbed , generally at times of stress, I would get cross at myself and that increased the stress....
but for the last 8 weeks I have, except ror 2 days, not had a cigarette. I havent given up, I am just not smoking at the moment.
had a bad day a week or so ago, smoked several, not had one since.
Once I stopped the "Fag as a reward" habit it really helped, and when I did fancy one I told myself not now, I'll give it half an hour.
still got a packet around the place as well, if they are there it takes another potential stress point for me out of the situation. And that is the crucial point for me, the crutch effect a fag gives.
will I smoke again ? Sure, I will, I havent stopped smoking, I have not had a fag for a while and I most certainly havent given anything up .
Good luck with it Al and dont let slip ups get in the way , if you have a fag its just that. One , nothing says you have to have another one in an hour , I mean , it was weeks since the one before......
