Post-Match Thread and Ratings Gateshead 0-0 Southend United

Got to be one of the most open and emotion controlling post match interviews I have ever heard.

It also further enhances the understanding of what our very own players and staff went through last year and how professional they conducted themselves throughout. So many of them would have felt how this chap feels, yet, they battled on amazingly. Unbelievable how many fans have forgotten that.

I hope Gateshead get themselves sorted.

Absolutely and especially when you consider there are no court cases involved, but much turmoil obviously and it seems, as there are no players or staff not getting paid on time as there was with us at the moment. However, there was in the past as he alluded to in one part of the interview.

Don't know whether it's been mentioned before but I was so absorbed in the game to notice. Suddenly, a couple of minutes before the end Parillon was brought on and my immediate thought was, why wasn't he on earlier. Has anyone any idea why one of our most talented players only made a very late show?
Given that he was brought on very late and seemingly instructed to sit deep rather than attack, I think the real question is why we didn't replace Bridge with Wind or Gubbins.

Completely agree. we've conceded 2 in our last 7. our defense is rock solid and we have 8 attackers all competing for 4 spots in the team, which is an excellent situation to be in. we're not blasting teams away, but Rochdale will be really concerned about how they break us down.

I knew we’d tightened up at the back but just two goals in seven games is outstanding stuff defensively.

I thought there were a couple who seemed a bit over-awed by the situation, Keenan took a while to settle in and Coker lost his way a bit. In fact, I thought that was one of the poorest midfield displays I'd seen for a while, as Husin was fairly invisible.

I thought the midfield absolutely bossed it.

Away at the team who scored the third most goals in the division they didn’t let them have a sniff.

First half we controlled it against a team who loves to dominate possession. Second half we played contain and shielded the defence.

They were playing playoff football - effectively our playoffs started a game early and our path goes from away at 8th to away at 4th to away at 3rd - so that bodes well for our chances.

We're all having a party
We're all having a party
We're all having a parrrrrty....

'Cos Gateshead ****ed it up

Nice little jaunt yesterday from us Wickford crew to the land of Ant and Dec. Not gonna lie, i wasnt looking forward to 5hrs in the motor with the poster Hlane coming home if the Heed had won. Thankfully our Italian-esque performance saved my earholes being burnt by SZ's manic depressive, glass half empty keyboard thudder😉

We rolled into town at half 11, found the Fog on the Tyne pub and stood there in amazement at the amount of fans in the boozer already, complete with singing and pyro. Ah, good old Blue Army.
The International stadium was impressive in size and stature, if you were running the 1500 or spear chucking. As a football venue, nah. It felt dated too, paint blistering, the old roof blown off was it? ..and not replaced. The seats were faded horribly and the plastic chair looked like it would crack under my weight. The wind had dropped thankfully, the sun appeared and i was all T shirt and moobs. The Shrimpers in the stands were quite subdued before ko as we listened to Gateshead's naughty 40 have a singsong under the eaves in the opposite stand, about 3/4 mile away. Shrimper fans included traffic cones in attendance, a kangaroo and a saxaphonist in english gentleman attire.

We were concerned for our drummer leading up to the game, didnt think he'd turn up, then glad he had, but down the front of the middle section we could barely hear him at the back.

Typical Southend game, defended like lions and missed all the chances. We only needed a point, who cares. Despite the forecast of cloudy and 11deg, i got a bit of sunburn on my face.

Playoffs and a tan. Perfect. Oh and chirpy Hlane back down the A1. Slept till 4am and how i dragged that derriere out of bed for work, i'll be ****ed if i know....

Not sure what you're on about, ever the optimist me, we were always going to do it!

Agreed. The balance we've had in midfield in recent weeks is the best it's been all season.

Husin's a class act in the holding role, he screens the defence superbly and offers more physicality than Morton.

Coker is prepared to make attacking runs and gives us a goal threat from midfield we otherwise lack. He's also very diligent with his positioning off the ball which gives KAF free reign to press high and run at the defence.

They managed Monday's game superbly but as shown in the games before they also give us a cutting edge - we'll need both qualities in the playoffs.

Isn't that exactly the correct thing to do ? The last thing you want to do is let their keeper have the opportunity to save a shot then launch the ball towards their strikers. Great game management in my book
If anyone saw the Inter v Barca game last night, you could argue Yamal should have taken the ball to the corner and played it back to his defence in order to see the game out, rather than shooting (hitting the post) and letting Inter go down the other end and seal the winner 🤔

When rhe euphoria about making the playoffs subsides perhaps some reality might creep in. The league table says it all, Barnet well deserved winners with York the pick of the rest and FGR in third way ahead of our playoff opponents Rochdale. Otherwise a thoroughly mediocre set of teams with little to distinguish one from another. To finish in the last playoff spot was owing as much to other contenders failing to hit a consistent run as it was to our own efforts. Were lucky to play Ebbsfleet and Wealdstone in the last two games before Gateshead.
It has to be admitted that the tactics employed to hold Gateshead to the goalless draw worked out well. However their dismal form over the past few weeks tells its own story and I am sure we won't find Rochdale so accommodating.
Our record of drawing as many games as we have won underlines the crucial lack of strike power, as does the fact that our top scorer is a wingback.
It's a one off game with all to play for, a very different scenario to the Gateshead game. This wil be a real test of the coaching for the game. Whilst not favouring a gungho approach, I hope we will not see a war of attrition rather than the 'free-flowing, attacking football' as mentioned in the recently published accounts. Time to see whether this management team and their chosen players really have what it takes. I hope they will grasp this opportunity to take another step towards the goal of returning to the EFL.

Yes I thought that, he's only a kid of course and a very talented one but if I was his manager I'd be absolutely fuming with him.
