Post-Match Thread and Ratings Gateshead 0-0 Southend United

Couldn't attend today so decided to purchase a stream pass from DAZN and what a stressful experience that was.It was awfull poor sound quality picture constantly jumping.DAZN recently said to me that the reason they decided to increase the cost ot pass from £9.99 to £14.99 was to improve the service. Would be interested to learn what others think.

As far as the game was concerned we totally controlled the game but just couldn't find the goal we needed, which sums up the team no cutting edge.

We got the result we needed so on to Rochdale to continue the venture
I have my own issues with DAZN, for the last month they have my home location as UK (Whereas current and actual location is France). My trip back to UK seems to have upset their systems..?

Anyway (maybe it was my complaint?) I couldn't purchase a match pass today "not available in your location" so my wife created an account (!) and I bought a match pass there. I missed the first 6 minutes.

The match may not live long in the memory, but the occasion most definitely will. Having dominated the first half - I lost count the number of corners we had - we really only had the Goodliffe header as the best chance. Maybe we are saving the goals for the match(es) to come, but as the second half went on we became less adventurous. KAF had an effort (deflected?) just wide, but other than that it was nail biting last 15/20+ minutes. LCP was not so much as an outlet to run with the ball, but won some useful headers, he is really quite tall.

Back to the DAZN coverage, I thought the commentators very fair.

Never felt like Gateshead would score. Which was a big plus. Our defence has been very tight of late which is ideal for the playoffs.

Rochdale won't be easy, but then no game in the playoffs is. I feel it benefits us being away from home this season, pressure is a off a little then. I can't see anything but a York final for whoever gets there

Just on way home, ETA 23:30, long day but worth every mile. Not a great game but them don’t think it was ever going to be. Thought we shaded the first half and Goodliffe had a great chance well saved and Coker should have done better but Gateshead offered little. Second half was not even but again Hayes was rarely tested and commanded his area really well. His catch from their corner in injury time under pressure was absolutely top draw and why he’d still be my No 1. Goodliffe again tested the keeper second half and we wasted opportunities on the break and Keenan also had a shot deflected just wide. But in truth Gateshead offered little. So job done and what a pleasure it was to be part of the 1755 travelling Shrimpers who did the club proud as always.

Player ratings, I’d give most 6.5, Hayes 7 and my MOM was Taylor 8 closely followed by Goodliffe and Keenan both 7.5

So onto Rochdale we go and hopefully we will take a big following. It’s winnable as is FGR if we get through and then who knows. Importantly we’ve given ourselves a chance and we’d have taken that at the start of the season

Munching my supper in a motorway service station now and finally reflecting on what I witnessed today. Basically a great deal of effort for little result (except we got the draw we needed of course!). For the first twenty minutes we were all over them but could not create a genuine chance. The rest of the first half was more equal and more or less petered out with little sign of quality on either side. The second half became increasingly tense and frenetic but neither side really looked like scoring. Although every time KAF broke with the ball we looked dangerous. Our defence was solid and made no silly mistakes. Our subs were effective and we played out the lengthy additional time with few alarums or excursions. Job done. Congratulations to the Three Amigos, COSU and the players. We need fear nobody in the playoffs.....well, except York City. Let's hope that one of the other play off teams defeats York before we have to face them in the final.

As I said earlier, I sat among the Heed fans. The attached selfie shows my successful camouflage attempt. I have on occasion sat among the home fans at away games before but this was the most difficult because the Geordies were so damned friendly. Everyone seemed to want to chat. Now, I can do some fine accents - Brummie, Yorkshire, Irish - but I discovered that I can't do Geordie. So I settled for Scottish to disguise my Essex voice. No one seemed to mind.

It was clear from the start that the Heed fans morale was very low, and not surprisingly. But they roused themselves to cheer on occasion and had a good go at GSM for his gamesmanship and later roasted Bonne for felling their keeper - I thought he was fortunate because some refs would have red carded him.

At the end the Heed fans didn't seem too depressed. It appeared to me that they were expecting to lose so they drew some small comfort from drawing. I felt a little sorry for them.

Only when I got in my car could I cheer our lads. And I did. Much to the surprise of the woman in the car parked next to me who I hadn't noticed!

Been looking at flights, cost and having to do a hotel before each is making it an expensive trip to see the good lady's brother. Think I will hold off till we make the final.

I thought that game was so typical of what we have witnessed this season. Plenty of possession but lacking the clinical cutting edge although quite solid defensively. I was pleased for all of us Shrimpers especially with what we have had to put up with over the last few years. A special well done to all those that travelled all those miles to cheer on the team.

First 10 to 12 minutes were good - I thought we needed to score. Best chance fell to Goodliffe but plenty of corners & attacking intention.

Then I started to notice the seagulls & for the rest of the half I watched the seagulls above the pitch quite a lot ............

Half time & sadly all the seagulls seemed to go elsewhere.

Tension rose as the minutes ticked by. Where were those gulls I thought?

Another good chance for Goodliffe & Appiah's deflected & dipping shot ........
8 minutes of extra time. Thought the referee was good but not sure where some of that time came from.

And for me, there are two types of football fans. Those that like players taking the ball to the corner & those that don't. Not for me thanks and I have aged even more (I didn't think that was possible) but finally job done.

It wasn't entertaining but if you had said to me in January that we would be in the play-offs I would have said "thank you very much".

Well, why not?
All my relations are Geordies, and for decent folk, there aren't many better.
I think the north-east has its issues but can think of worse places to visit.
PS. I can do a superb Geordie accent, lol! The trick is to finish a sentence on a higher note than when you started.
