Excellent article H .

The 21 goals in the First 30 rounds of the cup is still a record.
I think we scored more goals than the cup winners that year, Yet I don't think Best was the tournaments top scorer that year

when I spoke to Tony Bentley a few seasons back in the Shrimpers, he mentioned that Don Rogers was the best player he played against.

Great stuff Harry I was there to...I was at that away game at Swindon as well,we all had eyes on Don Rogers because he was meant to be some sort of Messiah.....I think I was - 20 in those days ...

Great great memories for me too!

The Doncaster game was my first as an eight year old; I was interested strongly. This interest was easily confirmed with the two incredible home cup ties agan Kings Lynn and Brentwood.I also remember few giving us a chance at Swindon; they WERE a good side at the time, so in many ways this was our best result...So here we were most unexpectedly through to the 4th round, this football supporting was easy!...Imagine the upset of an 8 year old on hearing the late Sat afternoon news that our run had come to an end, and I'd never even heard of Mansfield at that time...I was SO disappointed!...In some ways that was when football was "real" and less corporate &sanitised than it now is

I was there at all four FAC matches, what a season that was, I think I only missed about six games all season.

So the one you can get at Toffs (which I have, 'tis a beautiful thing) was for that season then?

I saw all the games you mentioned in your excellent report.Went to a lot of the away cup matches with Alf Smirk as a fellow passenger in my aunt's car.
Er I'm 56 how old are you ?

Recalling Alf's prediliction for the gin bottle it was lucky he wasn't driving.

Almost the same as you mate, I'm 56 in July.

I'm ashamed to say it's the first time I've noticed the nostalgia spot. Brings back so many memories. I started watching in 1965 so remember all the games mentioned. If I remember correctly John Kurila was also in the building trade and did a bit of work on my Dad's house extension.

Those were the days when you had to queue up early to get in the North Bank on a Friday night otherwise you couldn't get in. Melanie was a regular in the NB and is still to be seen now in the East Stand.

I remember we hired a van and drove overnight to Swansea once, we were asleep in the back and our driver fell asleep on a country lane and nearly wrapped us all around a tree. We arrived at the Vetch about 8am on the saturday and drove through the gates and virtually on to the pitch. Another away game that we lost but good memories.

Coach trips were more relaxed then, we often struggled to fill a coach but would stop in villages for refreshments. Brothers Grimm used to come round my house in Leigh selling the Blues lottery ticket for many years in the 60's. They certainly worked hard for the club.

Now that this thread has been resurrected I can chip in with the fact that I was also present at the Swindon cup game in 1968-9. I remember persuading Bob Stannard, a commercial artist colleague, who lived on Leigh Hill at that time and a couple of girls, to drive down to Wiltshire for what was described as an adventure day out. I remember doing the hard sell on the idea of going to Stonehenge in the morning......it was the time when you could still walk around the monument (i believe that I've still the black and white photos of that visit). I remember that we stopped at a really good pub before arriving at my ulterior motive for the trip......an away cup tie at the County ground. None of my co-voyagers were Blues supporters and I have my doubts as to whether any were converted that day.....at least for me it was the icing on the cake for a great day out. I seem to remember, in that season, Swindon were virtually invincible and us getting a 2-0 victory was a complete surprise. Remember buying a pink evening paper with a report of the match before leaving for home......
certainly still downstairs somewhere amongst my old memorabilia.
Weren't we drawn away to Mansfield in the next round? went there as well, with another friend Peter and remember a good local ale and then being in the stand around the half-way line near the tunnel. Didn't we nearly equalise near the end.....(hit the bar????).....oh god!.....shouldn't get me started on this nostalgia trip!.......

Swindon were a decent side that season and beat Arsenal 3-1 in the League Cup Final.

Mansfield memories pretty much spot on, Gary Moore smashed a shot against the cross bar a few minutes from the end.

Phew!!!.........good to know that the memory is still there........pity I can't remember anything about writing this earlier post around lunchtime:unsure:!!!!!
Don't I also recollect another similar incident? 1960-61 I was at Gillingham
and I'm sure we were leading 2-1 with only ten minutes left ended up 3-2 down.......wasn't it Bud Houghton who missed a great opportunity to equalise at the death?......again,..... I've got the match programme downstairs.
