Frendlies. Should we be getting excited?

Of course I understand the importance of pre season frendlies. An ideal chance for trialists, players on the fringe of the first 11, match fitness and confidence etc.

I am surprised so many people are getting excited by the results. Witham Town, Great Wakering and now Canvey. Sure its great that Harold got a hat trick Paynter is scoring etc. But shouldnt they? These players are no mugs. They have cost the football club alot of money. They are professional footballers who play at a far higher level than any of our opposition so far.
I just cant get excited about beating Canvey 6-1 nor do I think we are certain for a play off place next season as so many others do.

How very true.

To be honest, friendlies are not great to judge if we'll do well in a league season. It's all about fitness, and getting match time regardless of the result.

We haven't really played against quality opposition yet, so its very very hard to judge.

We'll just have to wait and see how the first few league games pan out.

I know for one that we need a very good start, and cannot afford like last season to go 17 matches without a win.

I'm not getting too excited as I have seen more than enough of the likes of Bradbury ,Harrold ,Foran ,Paynter and Hooper against much better standard than Witham and a very poor Canvey team that could not afford to keep their players once Jeff King pulled out .Of those Five ,I think there is hope and a much better season for Harrold and Paynter as long as they get in or around the Penalty Box more and don't play so deep where they are both useless .
The other Three ,well I'm sorry ,but I just can't see it happening for them .I would love them to prove me wrong tho .

confidence and fitness is what we gain from pre-season friendlies and probably the 2 things we lacked last season (along with that little bit of extra quality)... doing well in the pre-season will help us hit the ground running and so i think we can get excited but definitely not cocky about our chances.. it is going to be hard but i still dont see any reasons why we cant have asperations of coming straight back up

How we do in friendlies won't have any bearing on how we do in the League. All it can do is help with fitness, sharpness and confidence. After being relegated season last it is important this pre-season to do well even if it is only to boost confidence.

However, one real concern is that we haven't managed to keep a clean sheet yet.

No we shouldn't. But there again wouldn't some of us be moaning if we didn't win by these cricket scores.

we have to get back into the habit of winning, we shouldn't get ecxited but what we have seen seems to show that we can find the net albeit against pub teams

Tilly was at our friendly game in Heybridge today, and talking to the agent for our Hungarian centre back triallist, mind you he could be the agent for your triallist Zoltan as well!

i think a lot of people on here including myself have just missed watching football in general especially southend. its just good to go to a game without having to worry about getting a ticket and just paying on the door. seeing a few goals is also good but your right it is only lower league clubs and we should be beating these, i would be very worried if not.

Its clearly the summer for Hungarians because a few seem to be popping up on trial around the country!

He was probably just there to remind himself what a thoroughly blood nice chap Luke Guttridge is. Ah, perhaps not.................

Don't be so disrespectful. Our opposition so far may not have been fantastic, but they're a long way from being pub teams.

I don't know anyone that has got too excited over the results. It's nice to see us score and win some games, but in the end we all know they're meaningless games and I don't think anyone reads anything into them.

People need to remember the days before Tilly arrived - how many times against lesser opposition did we either scrape by or fail to beat these teams? Scoring goals breeds confidence and will do our strikers no harm at all.

You can firmly blame that on 3-4-3, and we have had a few trialists too.

I would have to agree with that for the most part. But the quality of opposition has left a lot to be desired, and we really should be able to stop them scoring. Even Tilly commented that he would have liked a clean sheet againt Wakering...

Indeed. I went to the pre-season game away at Baldock town about 6-7 seasons ago to watch us scrape a 1-0 win. Compare that to now and I would say that we have reason to be optimistic. However, I also agree we shouldn't get carried away...
