Freddy Poor With JCR

A Harrold-Paynter partnership, eh? Slow-moving but critically acclaimed...

Quote[/b] (Kris @ Sep. 12 2006,01:31)]From memory, JCR put in four crosses on Saturday, two of which were quality and one of which Freddy should have buried - I don't know what happened as it seemed to be a free header but it appeared to skim off his head and into his marker.

Freddy's form has nothing to do with JCR, in my opinion. Like I've mentioned elsewhere, he's lost a yard of pace for some reason. Whereas in pre-season and in the opening couple of games he was ghosting past players, now he's taking them on but they are able to get tackles in because he can't accelerate to his normal level. Look at the one chance he had against Sheff Wed - normally he would have burst clear of the defence and been able to take it on his right foot but he didn't have the initial burst of speed, which forced him into shooting with his left from a tighter angle.

Something clearly isn't quite right and my guess is that he's still struggling with his breathing in hot temperatures. Look at the speed he showed to score the third goal at Bournemouth in cooler evening temperatures and contrast that with the rather off-colour and lethargic showings of recent Saturdays. I certainly don't think it's a lack of effort.

Ultimately, I guess if my theory has any credibility then we'll be in for a treat tomorrow night.

Nothing to do with cooler air and all to do with Championship defences.

Last season he'd probably have buried that one on one that he missed Saturday, because the defender wouldn't have been so alert. Freddy's first touch wasn't poor, in fact it was a very good touch as it took him away from the defender to make sure that he could get a shot in. Had he touched it straight towards goal rather than slightly away from goal the defender would have got a block in.

The reason he has hardly run at defences this season is that there just hasn't been the space to do so. He's up against better defenders who are starving him of service.

His header was from my view in the South Upper goalbound until the defender opted to play volleyball.

Have to agree with this, the defenders in this league certainly are quicker and more agile, coupled with the fact that freddy always seems to have two around him.

This is where i think we need to see Maher or Guttridge getting forward though and using Freddy to drag the defenders away and create the space for one of the two central playes to break into.

Spot on, although I would rather Guttridge dragged the defenders away for Freddy than vice versa.

Best example of someone dragging defenders away was Paynter when he teed up Maher. That was a similar move to the one which did us twice on the opening day of last season.

Form is key, everyone has a dry patch, why are we so surprised?

IMO Eastwood has been a tad annoying to watch these last few games and isn't on the top of his game but no complaints coming from me.

JCR is becoming one of my favourite players due to his amazing work rate, as is the case with many of us on here I'm sure.

7 points from 6 games, keep that up boys and job done

...and one of the times they hit the bar when Burton teed up Whelan.
