Freddy and Harrold bids turned down

If Billy Sharp is off to Norwich for £2m then Freddy is certainly worth a bit more.

The last time the two were in the same Division they scored the same number of goals. Granted Billy Sharp was out injured for some of that season, but Freddy spent some time on the bench after being sent off and not getting back into the team. Billy also took Scunthorpe's penalties, whereas Wayne Gray took ours. You could therefore say that the two were pretty much evenly matched over the season.

So why do I think Freddy is worth more? Because he has one thing that Billy doesn't have, and that's a season's experience in The Championship. That, to me, is certainly worth something. How much, however, is the question. I therefore think that £1.5m is too low and that RM is doing the right thing.

As for the bid for Matt Harrold. Firstly it was from a League Two team so I doubt he would be interested, and secondly whatever people think of him, I have faith that he will come good, and i'm sure T&B think so too.

From the bids we have turned down and what Martin has hinted at - I'm sure he is looking for at least £2m now.

Its a brave move - just hope it doesnt backfire!

If Sharp does go for £2m to Norwich though, then you would think that would set the minimum for Freddy - guess we will have to wait for Charlton now then as I cannot see any other Champ club paying it.

Only other options I can think of are Derby or Sunderland - both we allegedly interested whilst in the CCC and Birmingham who have also been subject to rumour.

It would be better the settle this sooner rather than later though. I would imagine Tilly's 'A' List of players he wants rest on a bigger budget from the Eastwood sale.

With Martin playing hardball with bids, we could end up in the middle/end of July having to panic through the 'B' list to get some bodies in.

Agree, the longer this saga goes on the worse it is for the club. Though publicly Tilly and RM are singing from the same hymn sheet, Tilly must be dreaming of having £1m+ to spend on players which we need desperately as clearly things are either going very slowly or we have been turned down by his targets. Come a week on monday and pre season training begins, we dont want a player who doesnt want to be here training with us, it will disrupt the other players. Just accept the money and get on with buying the 3 or 4 players we need to make a promotion push this season.

i am disappointed about harrold, We should have taken the offer whatever it was, as long as there is a hole in my **** he will never be more than a league 2 player.

Think 1.5 would have done the job, I bet freddy got the hump about it all and I have this feeling that we may screw up and end up with a player who doesnt want to be here and less money for players we need.

I would have settled for 1.5 million a week ago but knowing Sharp is going for 2million means we should be expecting the same amount as Id value them equally.

However, why are Norwich offering 2million for Sharp and 1.5 for Eastwood ? Did they have to raise their Sharp bid, or is Eastwood valued a little less by people without a Southend bias ?

This was covered in a previous post but after Eastwood, Harrold was easily our best forward last season when you consider how much trouble he caused opposition defences, which also gave Fred a bit more space.

Harrold seems to take a massive amount of stick on here, but can anyone say Paynter,Bradbury, Hooper, or Foran contributed more?

Agree with your post, Harrold did make some telling contributions at times.

Id say Bradbury over the course of the season contributed more by his team play, if not his awesome goal scoring....

Think Ron Martin is probably hoping for a bidding war from interested clubs.
I’m pretty sure that Darren bent will leave Charlton soon and then hopefully Charlton might put in a sensible bid.

As for Harrold i haven’t really seen to much of him to be honest but judging from his stats his never going to be a 20 goal a season striker. From what ive seen he doesn’t seem to contribute much to the team all though he does look as though he tries hard. I just think he’s simply not good enough. I think its time to clear out the dead wood in the team.

To me Bradbury is typified by his "he holds it up well" reputation. Unfortunately thats about it. Denis Bergkamp was the master of holding the ball up but also made telling passes and scored goals. Bradders will no doubt make a decent contribution this season but to my mind we need someone who is a genuine goal threat to give Freddy a bit more space.

Good move by Ron. However long his contract is Freddy Eastwood is worth far more to this club than £1.5m and I would be very, very disappointed to see him go for such a small amount of money.

Excactly i think we should keep Bradders, hes the sort of player you want to bring on if youre 2-0 up with about 20 minutes to go. Hes pretty good at winning the ball in the air and will hold it up to break up the play.

As stated in quote above we need a striker with a bit more goal threat.

You are right, Dennis Bergkamp is better than Lee Bradbury.

Difference is though, Arsenal were a far better team in their league Dennis Bergkamp was a player Arsenal used to use to get hold of the ball and create magic when they were attacking in the last 3rd. He wasnt there as a physical presence though...

Southend last season used Bradbury to be able to get hold of the ball and hold it up so we could attack. Before he came back into the side we jsut couldnt hold onto the ball.

Personally think he has done a great job for us, but when Freddy leaves we do need two strikers who can score 15 goals each.

I think the point here is that players need to be multi-dimensional. Yes, you need someone who can hold the ball up, but they need to have another dimension to their game. This might be as a threat getting on the end of crosses, playing through balls, or working the channels.

That is absolutely fair. However, multi dimensional players like Dennis Bergkamp cost a little bit more than people like Lee Bradbury. I think we need to keep a bit of perspective here!

Indeed.

However Bradbury has been dismissed completely by many who expect him to be all of that but ignoring the fact he is good at one aspect which we did need last season.

After all if you are looking at players being multi-dimensional you can pretty much write off all of our strikers, Freddy Eastwood included! However I do agree that next season we need someone more well rounded.

Nextseason we are probably going to be without a player who can score 20 + goals and wont be able to have one of our strikers only scoring 5 goals all season so I think Bradbury's days are numbered.

I didnt mean to compare the two, but i was trying to make the point that with Bradburys lack of pace and the fact he is not really a goalscorer, we need something extra to go with Fred.
One of the only positions you can get away with if you are slow, is central midfield. He does have an eye for a pass sometimes, and can tackle. Maybe we should have tried him there when we were having out centre mid crisis last season.
