Frannys agent shocked by martins conduct

Keep it up Ron.. Also giving in to huge demands will unsettle the rest of the squad.. sure some players will rightly be paid more but there has to be some team structure or morale will suffer

I'm personally very encouraged by this.

Ron is a very shrewd and talented businessman, who knows exactly what he is doing. I think that this is a message to the agents more than the players, who I believe actually want to stay at the club.

What hasnt been mentioned is that the agent gets a 'cut' of whatever deal is negotiated - so it is in their interests to creat stupidly high demands. .

Just imagine what would happen if one (or all three) players get 200% wage rises? You cant treat employees differently in most companys - so if one gets a huge rise, the so do the rest of them. Our club cannot afford to do that - so Ron, quite clearly, knows this and has refused to be bullied into something the club cannot afford.

Probably Franno said he wanted to sign the contract but his agent said "hold on" we can get you more here, but it backfired probably because of the demands of Bailey's agent.

Yep, that's what I reckon has happened.

In my opinion Francis is the most likely to stay in the end out of those 3 anyway.

Exactly, which is the main reason players wages and associated fees have dramatically risen. The agent, no matter what they say, is only in it for themselves. If they were not this kind of person then surely they would be working as a social worker in inner city deprived areas.

Sounds positive.

This is giving me hope it's not all lost!

Yes I agree, I think it sounds positive. Francis obviously wants to stay with us and I don't think he is one of the players with an over inflated ego. He realises that his performances haven't been prolific but he will also be aware that he has improved a lot this season and that we don't want to loose him. I am sure that his agent just pushed Ron a little too far and that he wil end up singing when his agents backs down and comes forward with a more reasonable offer. IMO I don't think that Francis could get a better move than to stay with us right now.

Interestingly in the interview on Blues World with Steve Mildenhall, he said that he has been on the phone a lot to Francis over the last few weeks and he signed for us over Crewe and Yeovil because of how positive Francis was about the club.

I can see Francis signing for us as they sound like quite good mates

Blimey he wants a recording contract too? Cheeky tw*t! Who's his agent, Simon Cowell?

"Southend spoke to us and we went back with an counter-deal which is how it works in this industry.

"Normally you hold more talks again and meet somewhere in the middle. I was waiting for the club to come back to me.

"I haven't heard back from them since the middle of last week and Simon doesn't want to leave.

"This has come as a shock to me and obviously we'll be contacting the club to try and hold more talks."

How it works in this industry is probabley a key line and possibley RM hasn't got a clue how to handle experienced agents - I personally thought he buckled under pressure from Wolves overt the Eastwood deal

My personal opinion is that Ron Martin has overreacted and if its true theres only been one counterdemand then to list Francis is too harsh.

I understand we shouldnt be held to ransom but I really hope RM hasnt jumped the gun as it doesnt send out a very happy image of the club...

That's true but then we don't know the exact situation with Francis. Bailey apparently asked to double his wages which was probably taking the **** considering we are a League 1 club and didn't manage to get promotion, but we don't know what is causing the holdup over his new contract. He said only a couple of weeks ago that he was sure to be signing a new contract, but something has obviously gone wrong here. From the comments made by Steve Mildenhall on Bluesworld, it clearly sounds as though he enjoys being at the club so I wouldn't be surprised to see him signing on soon.

I totally agree JM - the art of any good business man is the ability to negotiate, and on the surface, this does not appear to have happened.

I totally understand RM's view about not holding the club to ransom, but at the same time, surely you have to explore all avenues when trying to keep your best players at the club before taking such a big decision and placing them on the transfer list.

If we want to move forward and be successful as a club, at some point that is going to have to involve giving players improved contracts - we may all hate that idea, but it is the world we live in. And let's be honest, is it really that bad? Players don't have an emotional investment in a club like we do, and would we honestly turn down the opportunity to earn more money if it was offered to us in our chosen line of work? Of course we wouldnt. Do we not all try and get more money out of the company we work for when it comes to appraisal time? Of course we do - In the current climate in this country, we need all the money we can get.

I don't think we should be bankrupting ourselves to try and keep players here, but to have 3 major players, 2 of which are the spine of your team, to all reject contracts and be placed on the transfer list is a major concern. If you throw into the mixer the rumours about Flavs, Gower and Macca not signing new contracts, where is that going to leave us?

Last season was a step in the right direction, making the playoffs. Next season, the next logical step is to be challenging for automatic promotion, based on us having the nucleus of a good squad. At the moment, that nucleus is being torn to shreds, and this hardline approach my well look good in the press, but when all said and done, by not negotiating further with these guys, we are running the risk of losing them, and any hope of success for next season along with it.

I totally disagree there. It doesn't matter 'how it works in this industry', negotiating is the same the world over. Ron Martin is an experienced, and successfull, businessman - I'm pretty certain he'll have done some haggling with contractors etc in that line of work.

He knows what he's doing.

I agree with you WRS. Ron ain't no foo'.

Good night i take it Rich ??

Funny how when the drink's talking, we often make the most sense isn't it? Except when you're Southminster of course! Seriously though, good post.

I'm quite encouraged by this to be honest. I suspect that the players weren't taking part in this at all until the agent brought them the most they think they can get out of the club.

I don't care how Francis's agent thinks this normally goes, Ron Martin has the right to do as he pleases. He's clearly banking on the players not wanting to leave, which the agent clearly shows, and for them to push their agents into closing a sensible deal.

It's obviously a gamble as he's completely at the mercy of the players' intentions to stay. I think it's telling that he's picked these three though.

I think they'll all probably sign contract extensions, in which case it was a great move. If they don't then obviously, with hindsight, it won't seem too clever. It's about time someone put their foot down over the absolute nonsense that goes on. If they know they won't get away with it they won't try it.

Agree with this. Have some sympathy with RM having to deal with money grabbing agents.

The players should take control if they are committed to the club and get around a table for as long a it takes to thrash out a mutually acceptable deal
to show their hand.

Why do Div 1 players need agents, waste of 10% IMO.

I agree with this, but think that RM has jumped the gun, plus I don't think their commitment will be 100% even if they do stay.

Loyalty works both ways and if the chairman cant see that he's an idiot, I would not want to work for someone who doesnt' value me or my contribuition.

Wouldn't be surprised if Tilly quits if offered a new job over this, how many times can he be expected to rebuild a team to compete for promotion only for the chairman to bvgger it up?

Dunno about you lot but I bought my season ticket early so as to help the club stabilize for next season, instead the opposite has happend :'(

Surely this should have only come out when you have passed the stage of no return, unless you have? What signals does to send to potential new signings

That we are a well run club following a strict business plan. That we spend what we can afford. That if they sign for us they won't get to the stage where they wonder if their next pay packet will arrive. That we won't mortgage our whole future on a gamble at glory beyond our means, go into financial meltdown and drop through the leagues as a result (sound familiar toellandback?).

Surely this should have only come out when you have passed the stage of no return, unless you have? What signals does to send to potential new signings

That's the crucial question, isn't it. Could be taken in one of three ways - don't do as we want and you're off, try and rip us off and you're off, or we only want committed players here.

I take it as the 3rd option, but then as a supporter I suppose I would :support:
