Memory Lane Favourite Southend landmark - past or present.

Dragging you right back mate..................do you remember a huge toy shop on the High Street, had about 3 floors that used to stretch back?

And also the bait and tackle shop on the left at the top of Pier Hill, think it was the last shop on the right before the hill?

The bait shop was Called "Goings".The Toy shop was half way up the high street from Pier Hill on the Left ..But the name escapes me at the moment ...wasn't it the Original "Argosy Toys " before thy moved to Westcliff?

Do you remember Scamps nightclub as well? (for younger viewers that was the original name for Rain or Storm as it is called now?)

I worked there long enough ..it was originally The Penny Farthing but went through many name changes including the ones you said ...but also the Zodiac club

I thought that was Bermans? in Southchurch Road which was a Toy Shop that also sold Lawnmowers.

Not sure............but i remember there being one on the high Street, it seemed huge, was there when i was about 7 years old. Not far from were the book shop is now, in fact i think it across from Woolworths?

Anyone rember the original Dixons store where WH Smiths is now?

Although McDonalds has been in the High Street for 30 years I think the first Burger place might have been Huckleberrys which is now the Burger King.

One of my favourite buildings is the Kursaal, being 29 I obviously don't remember it before it changed in to a housing estate but have heard the stories and seen the pictures of its theme park heydays. I'd love for it to be used and used well again, it's such a shame to see the Old Girl going to waste.

Yeah I seem to remember it now it was in the older building on the corner of Royal Mews next to Tomassis?

When did you work there mate ??

The Penny Farthing was where my DJ ventures started....I was 16 and fibbed about my age and was a cloakroom attendant.....Dick aka the Rocking Goose was there at the time ..and I just filled in before he started work and from then on worked with him through the Alpha Two. Talk of The South...Tots and many other venues about Southend..He of course now owns Dick Devignes in the high street.

Sadly i do remember it mate, although i used to love the "Hearts and Diamonds" ride that was across from the Kursaal...remember it?

Yep sure do and it was when there was two-way traffic up and down the high street. Remember well as I used to get off of the bus there and at Times furnishing - where Franky and Benny's is now.
No one-way system or under pass then

I spent a few low budget bank holiday Mondays underage drinking in DJs on pier hill in the late 80's.

That was Brightwells wasn't it ?

That rings a bell John......my memory is not what it was, i just remember it being on the right heading towards the pier and it was a really old building, had every toy you could dream of, and always seemed really cluttered.
