Famous Players

Quote[/b] (Blue Streak @ June 07 2005,20:19)]I have a Program for a friendly against FK Austria or somebody with pictures of Ossie Ardiles and Trevor Brooking on the front as guest players for SUFC. Not convinced either of them turned up though. Anyone remember that ?

George Best, at the end of his playing days, playing his only ever away game for B'Mouth at Roots Hall in front of ex-wife Angie and a very young Callum (formally of Leigh-on-Sea) will stick in my mind. The guy was banging the ball inch perfect across the park to feet. Sheer class !!
Wonder whatever happened to Callum ?

Trevor Brooking played but Ossie Ardiles was injured so Spurs sent down Graham Roberts to play instead. The game was played on a Sunday in Febraury, I can only assume the team we were due to play against was still in the FA Cup. There were a few (quite) famous Hungarian international players in the Austria Vienna team that day, and they all played in bright purple leggings under their shorts, like gay super-heroes.

The match also marked the first Southend appearance of Micky Welch (our first signing from Grays), and that's where the comparison with our last signing from Grays ends! His first touch in a Southend shirt was a shot that cleared the North Bank.
