families through the ages

Me and Charlie have been going for 2 seasons now. The people that know me know the reasons I started taking him and I love it.

I look forward to a Saturday and bringing him to Roots Hall or whatever away game we're going to. Because I swear he enjoys it just a much as I do. People at work still dont believe me that he sits still (he is 2 years 8 months) but with the combination of sweets/crisps/bam bams/fruit he is good as gold and I hope it continues for years to come

I've said all this before on here, I started going with my dad in the early 70s and I still go with him now (although I had a bit of a cooling off period in the late 80s/early 90s). Only difference is we take my son now as well, so that's a generation of 3 going together. The family has always supported the Blues, my dad's dad was a friend of Frank Gill and others around in the late 40s/early 50s, and brought both my dad and his younger brother along in the early days.

Ah yes. Cant remember the first game, although I do remember Harry Threadgold was the keeper. Must have been about 6!!.First away game was at Rotherham in the cup, lost 3-2 Frank Banks scored one of our goals. Always a northbanker.Good times there. Down side. Going to Brighton when we lost 9-1 Mel Slack scored the best goal of the game(shame we were 6-0 down at the time. Best coming over from here to the LDV FINAL .Shame we lost Great support.

It's a little different for me. My dad and I are the typical father-son combo at games, but it was me who introduced him to the game rather than the other way around. He wasn't even a football fan back then!

'twas SZ's very own Overseas Shrimper who convinced me to come and see the Shrimpers in the Jobson/Webb era. All I can remember of the old man's first game was him being the only person in the North Bank applauding the opposition goal when they equalised, and me hounding him for embarrassing me.

18 season tickets later and you can't keep him away from the place!

My dad started taking me about 26/27 years ago and I have been hooked ever since, we have been all over the country supporting the blues, then in 1996 my son was born and guess what....he is blues mental, three generations sat together makes me proud as punch

Dad first took me in September 1985 - a 2-1 win against Scunthorpe. Continued to go with Dad until he died in 1995, otherwise I imagine we'd still be going together now.

Should a junior Welham make an appearance over the next few years, they'll get dragged down to Roots Hall whether they like it or not!

Not so much a father-son combo but a father-daughter combo for me. My dad took me when I was about 7 to my first match along with my brother. He stopped going after a while but I was hooked so I carried on going with dad. 13 years on and we do pretty much every home and away game together. It'll be a bit strange next season though as I'm off to Canada for a year as part of my course at uni so he'll be going without me and I'll be starved of football the whole time :(

My Dad first took me in about 87/88 with David Crown scoring the only goal as we beat Bury. He continued taking me through to the mid 90's but he's more negative about the Blues these days then some of SZ's doom mongers put together so he stays away these days, only popping up every copuple of years to see us lose, he came to the Oldham game before xmas for example.

I was about 7 when I first persuaded the old man to take me with him to games. Within a couple of seasons we were going to every home game so got season tickets for us and my granddad, who had first watched us at the Greyhound Stadium. Three generations of us went together every game until I went to uni. My grandfather's eyesight has pretty much gone now, so he just listens at home on the radio, but he came with us for one last game at the Millennium Stadium for the play-off final. Now my father has moved away from the area - although he came back for Orient away and listens to games on Bluesworld - so my only family link are my various cousins spread around the ground.

Always baffles me how long time supporters can stop going, going to football on a saturday is quite simply 'what we do' I arranged my wedding so I didn miss any games and sure my son will do the same in the future

my dad never took me when i was young, as due to growing up in the east end, he is a closet spammer.

However, in recent years i have started to take my dad to games, and more recently, i have taken my son (3) to his first 4 games... the first of many we shall watch together i hope.

Attended my first game aged 7 in 1964 and fondly remember the brass band at half time. Sticks in my memory those friday nights when we got 16-17 thousand against teams like Newport County, Southport, Barrow, Aldershot and many others. Remember beating Workington 7-1 on a friday night when Tommy Lawrence was in goal just after leaving Liverpool.
Pleased to say my son (now 23) is a diehard shrimper
All the youth clubs who would knock seven shades out of each other at any other time would unite as one in the North Bank.
Blooded on Ray Smith , Eddie Firmani, Derek Woodley Phil Chisnall, Eddie Clayton Tony Bentley Andy Smillie and many many more

Grandad first started taking me in 1967 in East stand Reds. Progressed to the old paddock in east stand a year or so later until transferring to the North Bank in 1970. Remember having to pay a 5 pence supplement to get into the west stand. Enrolled my sons as junior Blues in 92', and they still come with the 'old man' today. Joined me for a swift half (or 10) in the coach & horses on saturday.

Started going with the old man in 1981, North Bank. First game was Halloween night (Beat Stockport 2-0). It was a great season to start supporting the Blues, 19 wins and 4 draws at Roots Hall, although it all came as a nasty shock to a young lad of 9 when we started losing at home with some regularity....
Went more often with the 'lads' during my teens and early 20s, but back with pops in the West these days - same seat for the last four seasons. Paid for both our season tickets last season with my winnings on a bet (described by most as foolish) that we would win League One. Sadly, this years' tickets came from my hard earned.....

More to life than football and its not always a priority for all of us.

I first went in around 1980 as my mate next doors Dad used to take us.

I didnt start going myself until the late 80's and then got fed up with it in the mid 90's only returning to jump back on the bandwagon after Tilly's return.

Funnily enough Ive more committments now than I had and am more "into" football than I ever was, mainly because the internet keeps you involved between games.

I do have two kids and hope to be taking them at some stage, although my 4 year old has been to a reserve game she doesnt show much interest.

Well I go with my old man and have done since I was six or seven.

My Dad's Grandad supported Southend and went week in week out from the time the club was pracitcally formed so theres another father/son combo for you.

My old man blooded me in 1987 against Brentford at home, we drew 1-1 and Tilly scored, think Brush was in the team as well. However he doesnt go anymore, think his last game was during the Alvin Martin era - it was like someone turned the lights out! He still follows the lads but just sits at home and predicts the results (usually correctly). I have held a season ticket since the Wignal days and will one day pass the buck to my offspring.

When i replied earlier in this thread it was mainly about how my son comes with me .. but no mention of how i started going with my dad in 1977

We started off in the old bench seats that are now the East Blacks and spent around 3 or 4 years there, onto the South where we used to stand right in the back row, then a couple of years in the East Blues

When i was 16 i left dad behind and stood on the North Bank for many happy and crazy years until we were booted out in favour of the away fans   ... i went back to sitting with the old man in the South Upper and stayed there till 2003 when BLUEBLOOD Jnr got his first season ticket with me in the Family Enclosure

Saw my first game, against Man City in the cup, mid 50s i think, not sure who was there with me, def not my old man git buggard of when i was 3. Prehaps,he saw all those future games he would have see.
