If Phil wanted Barnard? then he should be shoving a contract under Fagan's nose before another club signs him.

He has been on trial and available to other clubs for a month, doesn't seem inundated with offers. Might not be young and hungry enough?

As for Barnard I would imagine if there hadn't been a promise of a contract when he came on loan he wouldn't be here.

The fact he has been on trial so long and still not signed wouldnt indicate that Brown has the same confidence either.

My guess is that he could get 1 fagan or 2 cheap signings. He's probably waiting to see about the other trialists and the squad before committing. Fagan would probably be a significant earner in the squad.

As Beefy pointed out elsewhere players get paid 2 months after their contracts expire.

Its very possible that we are just waiting for that to finish this week before signing.

ahh that makes sense.

Partly the reason but you missed the crucial third element, pacey, I repeat what we need are young, pacey hungry players and we need to get them in now in a pacey manner before they are snapped up by another club who are pacier at making signings

Played well again tonight
My bet is that we have talked general terms and what the offer will look like.
Its less than he would want and 1 year not two
So he will wait and see if something better turns up, if not and we still want to make an offer he will sign.

A L1 sign came in last year and he is in the shop window

Given PB has said he is in better shape than he has seen for a few years, and he knows what he can do, it difficult to believe PB would not have him if the deal was right.

So strictly we may not have made a formal offer but I bet they both know what it looks like.

My bet with a week and a bit to the season is that we will offer a bit more and he will sign.

BTW he wasn't looking short of pace this evening by all accounts

He wont get a 2 year deal at his age and very much doubt he would expect to either.

I think Beefy's theory yesterday makes sense, that players get paid 2 months after their contracts expire, which will expire today. So we could be waiting for his contract parachute payments to finish before signing him as he would have been on better money at Gillingham and it suits him as well as us.

He has been available for two months so if he was going to get an offer elsewhere he would surely have gone by now.

And I guess the later he signs the less we'll pay him in total for a year? There isn't a rush to sign if he's training and integrating with the team

Indeed, and the money he gets from Gills will be more than we pay him so its in both parties interest.

I dont know if thats the case, but it does certainly sound feasible.
