Face up to it for once

I'd actually go for Paynter,

Did you see any of Paynters games for us?

He offered absolutely nothing except running behind a defender who managed to score an own goal, and hitting the bar against Cardiff when the ball deflected off his head.

I think we all need to face up to the fact that Southend do not have any money to spend so its all down to taking chances on non league players and hope we can find another Eastwood.

you have got to give him a chance. there is a big difference between league 1 and the championship. all our strikers last season were not very good. even eastwood wernt the most terrifying person. west brom and sunderland defences are much better than orients or northamptons.

Did you see any of Paynters games for us?

Yes I did and he looked like another Barry Conlon. A young lad who a bunch of overweight middle aged blokes had decided to slag off no matter what he did because he was young and succesfull.

If he leaves us he'll be a success elsewhere.

I believe the experience of playing in the Chumpionship for many of our lads was a fantastic opportunity and a real eye-opener as they pitched into battle against household names and what i call real pro's.
Other than Freddy who it seems will go if the price is right and because we need half a dozen new faces to up our squad,we haven't really lost players and those who played last year will play again. Our on the deck style of play has improved, our team hasn't been ripped apart by being relegated and i think those that need to improve will.
Too many times last season i thought Freddy was too static as we worked the ball upfront,so he was too easily marked or in the wrong place at the wrong time.I feel Macdonald will improve our pattern of play and if he gets off to a good start will bang 'em in.
I also feel Matty H will enjoy the slack marking and lesser ability of L1 defenders to create more havoc in danger areas than his efforts of late. But where he needs to improve his game is to have the ball at his feet and be able to turn with it so he is facing the goal then let it fly.
Training with Fred he should be watching him closely because he is a master at creating shooting opportunities for himself,Fred's quick feet enables the ball to keep moving and the close control stops the defender from lunging in for fear of giving away free-kicks.
So Harrold, stop playing with your back to goal and start shooting,a decent partnership with Macdonald is looming methinks.

duh? What a ridiculous post. So following the same theory, as Southend dont have any middle age players, the overweight middle age supporters will slag off every player because they are younger.

If Paynter got slagged off, it was becasue he didnt fulfill the expectation that the fans wanted to see from an expensive signing. I sincerely hope he comes back and plays a big part in this seasons campaign if nothing else but to justify the money Tilly spent on him.

what is it with us slagging our own players.

Other than 2 or 3 players last year no one looked fantastic and i for one thought the lad looked a handfull when he played against us, perhaps he raised his game as we were his local team i don't know.

However what's the point at slagging him off prior to the season starting we have got to be the most fickle fans, if any particular player does not turn it on in his 1st 3 games "he is crap and we should get rid of him" and for that i give as examples

Clarke, Hammel, Francis, Paynter, Foran, Harrold, JCR.........

no wonder we can't sign players....we could be fast getting a reputation as poor supporters

FFS get behind the team .......rant over.......

yes this ia negative thread about a player
yes it is deserved
dont care that all you so called 'amazing, perfect supporters dont want to critise any players in the team' are going to give me any negative rep.

Matt Harrold please somebody must see even tho we were indeed out of our deph last year how poor a player at this level he is. Please look at this record for a STRIKER!

Years Club App (Gls)*

2003-05 Brentford 32 (2)

2004-05 Dagenham & Redbridge (loan) 4 (1)

2005 Grimsby Town (loan) 6 (2)

2005-06 Yeovil Town 47 (9)

That's actually quite an impressive record for a teenager...

I reckon there is an awfull lot of blinkered thoughts going on here. From all spectrums of opinion.
Of course, you are right. It would seem that some are hell bent on 'slagging' off our own players at the moment but, If you look at the wood rather than the trees, I would suggest that perhaps it is more out of fear for the future in the absence of freddie. As opposed to personal vendettas. I suspect noboby really believes that any of the present crop of 'strikers' (bar Mac whom we have yet to see play) will shoot us to the top of the league. Thier collective performances last season, sub or no sub were pretty dire. So to suggest some fans are 'fickle' is plain wrong seeing as their opinions are generally based upon the evidence of watching last season.
As for why we dont appear to be able to sign players....I reckon there is a lot more to it than 'poor supporters'.

it's not blinkered, i just think that Harrold did ok, granted nothing special, but ok. To log on and see thread after thread slagging him of is not necessary at this point of the season

Good post, as well as can be expected would probably sum up his season. Every young player we sign isnt going to be as good as Eastwood

he was out of his depth in the championshaip as was most of our team, why don't we just give him a chance at this level and go from thereLike steveo said not everyone we sign will be a new freddy eaatwood but what he will be hopefully is a good 10 goal a season second striker to accompany freddy or whoever else we get. leave the bloke alone

Mind you 16 goal Freddy Eastwood apparently wasn't good enough for many of our supporters last season.

Hey Yorkie, how come you havnt been stricken with the massive bad rep yet? A certain Mr B had to go back to a post I made in April to find a reason to hit me with a massive bad rep. Do these people think we care?

Oh thats only a matter of time.

I think MrB probably neg repped that particular post as he looked at your profile and someone had already given you negative rep for it.

Indeed, if a player worth 2 million pound and scored 16 goals gets slaughtered what chance does a striker bought for peanuts have.

That why I say give them a clean slate for next season...

Sorry Jam Man and Yorkshire Blue, you are missing the point with Eastwood. He got criticised because of his attitude, not for his goals scored. Of course we all appreciated his goals, but as I have said on another thread, near the end of the season, his attitude was disgraceful. If in any other industry, you knew you was the best employee, but you just swanned around the office, looking down at others, making people know that you think you are too good to be there, you will be disciplined !!! And rightly so. That was the problem with Freddy in the last few months of the season.

Funnily Eastwood has swanned around for 3 seasons but the fans only slaughtered him for it when we werent winning.

Whilst his mind might have started to look to being elsewhere I still thought he put in as much effort as he ever did, but his laid back manner made him look like he didnt want to be here.

That is incorrect, he did not swan around, he ran and harried players and he also 'tried' to put his foot in and he also looked as though he cared.

The last 3 months of the season, none of the above applied.

There is a MASSIVE difference between being laid back and the way he was at the end of last season.

Lol, Eastwood has never harried players, he was even crticised by Tilly for his work rate at one point.

We will agree to disagree on that one then...
