I thought Coker should have tried to clear the ball for their goal, he didn't seem to know there was a player behind him.

That apart, it was a pretty solid performance all round.

It was hard to tell who got the final touch on the first, the stadium announcer gave it to Laird.

Straker had a great game, scoring the second and playing a huge part in the third goal. He certainly seems to have come on leaps and bounds since his awful performance against Bristol Rovers.

Don't know whether you were at Chesterfield back in August but we played bloody well then and sadly came away with nothing, due to a added-time goal. So pleased we continued to play well up there and this time managed to come away with a result.

I was, and you're right - we did.
I also thought the Chesterfield of August were the best side we've faced this season. Not the Chesterfield of today though.

Cracking performance and a great away day. Performance was full of passion, effort and a lot of quality.

Bentley : 6: Little to do despite all their 2nd half pressure. Picked ball out of net and made decent if expected save at 2-1
White : 7: shaky first 10 mins, but solid after that. Did ok going forward too
Hokey : 7: very solid
Prosser : 8: outstanding, defended really well
Kiernan : 8: would have been MOM if he'd lasted the game. Looks a class above
Straker : 9: Outstanding in attack and defence. Very well taken goal and a couple of fantastic runs.
Laird : 8: Great energy throughout and timely goal
Timlin :7: held team together with Laird. Good quality in attack, but defended really well second half
Clifford : 7: Strangely didn't have much of the ball, but ran his knackers off closing down and pressurising. He did absolute doggies until going off late on
Hurst : 8:touches of class, but put in a shift too. Thought he was out on his feet about an hour in, but had a hell of a second wind
Corr : 7: retained possession throughout. Whether you love him or not, he's instrumental to how we play under PB. Great performance without being his best in front of goal
Phillips : 7: worried when Kiernan went off at 2-1 with Phillips presumably a bit rusty, but he slotted in perfectly. Very composed
Thompson : 7: some nice stuff when we came on. Actually helped us keep possession in their half rather than just being the extra defender.

I think the Hurst goal has become my favourite Southend goal ever. Perfectly timed to knock the stuffing out of Chesterfield after all their second half pressure and the penalty miss. Being a football fan is al about magical moments, and that was one of them.

Incidentally does anyone know who the clown near the drum was who was shouting at Straker to F off about 5 minutes before he put us in front with a fantastic header. Glad to hear the majority telling him to shut up. Prize bellend!

Lol lee Venus I bet

Bentley 6 - quiet day
White 7 - solid
Coker 7 - ditto
Kiernan 5 - beaten in the air too often (including in the build up for their goal) and scares me ****-less with his positional play for balls over the top
Prosser 7 - a rock at the back
Timlin 8 - ran the game for us, particularly first half. He wins the ball high up the pitch and he's the only one who can construct attacks by changing the angle and direction of moves
Laird 8 - lots of energy but actually used it to pop up in the right places. Even scored a header!
Clifford 5 - absolute passenger. Carried by Laird and Timlin
Hurst 8 - looked up for it
Straker 8 - sublime bit of skill for Hurst's goal. I'm tempted to give him a 10 just for that.
Corr 8 - was great first half when he had runners to link up with. Didn't see the ball second half, nor any of his team-mates but he worked manfully.

Phillips 7 - shored us up
Thompson 7 - much better than recent performances

Were you watching the game facing the wrong way?. I know it's about opinions but to give Clifford and Keirnan 5s is a bit harsh Clifford ran his socks for team, very unselfish performance and Keirnan was equally as good, if not better than Prosser. Minimum 7 for each.

It was intresting talking to some of the Chesterfield fans in the Chesterfield Arms before
the game.
It was almost as they were sure sure they were going out the cup.
They said your favourites and on a storming run. Chesterfield are on a shi!!! run.
They also said Southend are a bigger team than Chesterfield.
Personally i think we are two similar sized clubs. It was not a wind up!
Chesterfield fans inside the ground, i also thought were almost excepting defeat and were expecting the worse. However there players were up for it. Just outbattled. We wanted it more!!

We were superb, better than bank holiday saturday. I though Corr and Timlin were brilliant worked there socks off.

But that run from Starker to set Hurst up for the last goal How many Chesterfield players did he beat!!.
I know he beat a few of them at least once or twice, but it must have been around ten.
Finally anyone else on the train home with the players as i understand they were really enjoying themselves. Well deserved lads!!

This is the first time we have won both our matches in the First and Second Rounds of the FA Cup without the need for a replay since 1982.

Our reward the following January was a Third Round tie at home to Sheffield Wednesday, which we lost on the second replay.

I have been lucky enough to see both matches and both were well deserved wins against good opposition. Ooohh, I feel all fluffy inside.

Hash tag: GoingbacktoWembley?

Kiernan was not as good as Prosser. If you were facing the right direction Prosser won his headers and wasn't dragged out of position.

Clifford may have run about lots but to little effect. Do you want me to give him 'club man of the year' award for trying?

It's no coincidence that both were subbed (albeit due to injury in Kiernan's case) and that we played better after they were subbed.

Did he not have any clothes on then?

I do agree that "running around a lot" is not in itself a wonderful thing but I deliberately sat and watched Clifford as much as possible as I was worried about his "hot head" nature. And I found that he rarely touched the ball. But he did close down players and in the first half played a vital role in ensuring that Chesterfield were under pressure and harassing them into mistakes. In all, I think he added a balance to Timlin's "sat in the hole infront of defence" role.

Not sure about the 2nd half as almost the whole team was under pressure and not playing the ball to each other until late on.

Agree with you. He didn't see a lot of the ball, but the energy he showed pressing high up the pitch and putting the opposition under pressure forced countless turnovers of possession. Whether you like Clifford or not, his role yesterday was clearly key to how we went about things.

To be honest if you judge player's performance only on what they do WITH the ball, your overlooking half of their role. It wasn't pretty, but he did as much as anyone to get us control of the game in the first half.

Kiernan 6, the others 7's and 8's, Straker 9. Lost our way a bit in the middle third of the 90. Fortunate they had little goal threat at the time. Not the Chesterfield of August but we were.
