An excellent turn out especially so close to Christmas and in an FA Cup tie. Well done all those dedicated fans, good effort.

Game of two halves for me.

Looked assured in the 1st half despite the early set back. I thought we were playing more of a 4-1-4-1 with Timlin infront of the defence. Couldn't see the 1st goal as it was a muddle in the box from a corner but Straker's header looked to be going wide and then shaved the post ......... and in. Would you believe it. Good team performance all round.

2nd half very different. Chesterfield harassed and closed us down and played 2 at the back at times and pressured leaving the back 4 to lump it out of defence and straight to the other team. Phillips came on for a striken looking Kiernan and the pattern of play continued until Barry won a corner infront of the away fans ........ and then was fouled in the box by the giant Chesterfield centre-forward. Good penalty kick but goalie guessed correctly and saved well. That gave more impetus to Chesterfield and thereafter a "world class", top drawer, fabtastic save from Bentley kept us ahead.

All this time Strakes was on the right until Thompson came on for Clifford (who ran his socks off and no silly challenges) and Strakes swopped with Hurst. Suddenly Strakes had the ball on the left, beat himself and one man, poked the ball past a second and then hooked the ball past a third before passing to Corr(?) who played in Hurst in the box. Hurst dallied and dillied (did time stand still for a while?) but no need to panic as he then smacked the ball into the net.

Overall, a very good performance - not a fluky result and great to see replacement players coming in and the team not crumbling.

Tricky to pick a man of the match. Contenders include Tims, Corr, Hurst, Coker, White ....... but not for the first time this year I will plumb for Strakes. It's madness, I know - a snip at £17,500!!!

Lastly a word about the person who acts like a idiotic windmill standing infront of the Chesterfield dugout with a shiny head and a scruffy tracksuit making a fool of himself. Why do it?

Maybe the best I've seen them play this season? Especially as we lost a goal so early to some pretty average defending. For me, the different in out consistency has been Timlin coming into the side. He's EVERYWHERE, and sets the tempo in midfield.

No coincidence that we are playing so well with laird and Timlin in the side. Easily our best two midfielders in that position and one of the reasons we struggled last season without them in the side. Allows hurst so much more freedom. Then you have likes of Clifford, Leonard, Payne and Straker all playing well, when given the chance. This today along with Pompey result are real benchmark results this season. Keep it up and surely we will be in league 1 next season. As for the cup, would live a big side away, players deserve the chance and the revenue is much needed. Fancy us at old Trafford at the moment!

Don't know whether you were at Chesterfield back in August but we played bloody well then and sadly came away with nothing, due to a added-time goal. So pleased we continued to play well up there and this time managed to come away with a result.

I think we played better today (possibly). Two very different games from the same 2 teams - however, I would say we have "improved" and they (Chesterfield) may not have.

Talking to some Chesterfield fans after the game and they thought their team was poor .... but I think they were underestimating how well we played.

Yet another team performance- 7 s all round really. Bossed it.
To be fair, it was a great performance, but we hardly bossed it. We barely got within 30 yards of their goal between 40 mins and 75. Defended very well though and limited their chances

Corr's penalty definitely was...until he took it.

best chant..."Who's the w***** with the fork!"

Maybe he should not have got in the way of our player's pre-match training.

Cracking performance and a great away day. Performance was full of passion, effort and a lot of quality.

Bentley : 6: Little to do despite all their 2nd half pressure. Picked ball out of net and made decent if expected save at 2-1
White : 7: shaky first 10 mins, but solid after that. Did ok going forward too
Hokey : 7: very solid
Prosser : 8: outstanding, defended really well
Kiernan : 8: would have been MOM if he'd lasted the game. Looks a class above
Straker : 9: Outstanding in attack and defence. Very well taken goal and a couple of fantastic runs.
Laird : 8: Great energy throughout and timely goal
Timlin :7: held team together with Laird. Good quality in attack, but defended really well second half
Clifford : 7: Strangely didn't have much of the ball, but ran his knackers off closing down and pressurising. He did absolute doggies until going off late on
Hurst : 8:touches of class, but put in a shift too. Thought he was out on his feet about an hour in, but had a hell of a second wind
Corr : 7: retained possession throughout. Whether you love him or not, he's instrumental to how we play under PB. Great performance without being his best in front of goal
Phillips : 7: worried when Kiernan went off at 2-1 with Phillips presumably a bit rusty, but he slotted in perfectly. Very composed
Thompson : 7: some nice stuff when we came on. Actually helped us keep possession in their half rather than just being the extra defender.

I think the Hurst goal has become my favourite Southend goal ever. Perfectly timed to knock the stuffing out of Chesterfield after all their second half pressure and the penalty miss. Being a football fan is al about magical moments, and that was one of them.

Incidentally does anyone know who the clown near the drum was who was shouting at Straker to F off about 5 minutes before he put us in front with a fantastic header. Glad to hear the majority telling him to shut up. Prize bellend!
