Exotic Honeymoon locations - Child friendly?...

to be honest, if i was booking a honeymoon (and i will be soon), its probably the one time i wouldnt (or rather the missus wouldnt let me) book something last minute... just like the wedding, its all part of what seems to be something organised on a military precission scale.

Sorry to jump in on your thread Smiffy, but myself and the future lady Davros are looking at doing a 3 week tour of Thailand, Taiwan and Malaysia for our honey moon, so if anyone has any tips, good beaches, places to see etc, stick em down

So this time next year I'll be a married man (Sorry ladies)

I am now turning my attentions to Honeymoon destinations. We are both quite set on the Caribbean (St Lucia/Dom Rep/Barbados/Turks & Caicos etc) or Indian Ocean (Seychelles/Mauritius/Sri Lanka etc) as neither of us have been there and we fancy something quite luxurious and exotic.

Now we already have a 5 year old (No sex before marriage my arse!) so the resort needs to be child friendly, with plenty for the nipper to do. Waterslides and plenty of pools, playground, kids club etc would be good.

The only ones that have popped up so far are Beaches resorts (very pricey) and a couple of others that don't look to hot in terms of food/rooms/location etc.

Is it really that hard to find a luxurious exotic resort that gives us the treatment we want on a honeymoon, plus really caters for children, without having to rob a bank to pay for it?

Your suggestions would be most welcome...
We went to Sri Lanka and the Maldives for our honeymoon in March/April. We'd definitely recommend going there, but unfortunately I wouldn't say either place were particularly child-friendly. I definitely wouldn't take a child to Sri Lanka, and the resort locations are also adult oriented. The sights involve walking/climbing, and while the safari/wildlife stuff is incredible, I'd imagine a 5 year old would have more fun in Colchester Zoo.

The Maldives are amazing, and I know there are some islands that are geared for children, however they are still unlikely to have waterpark style pools or anything like that.

Mauritius is larger, and may have more suitable resorts. The Maldives are basically desert islands which are very simply equipped to if you're not into watersports or snorkling/diving you may get a bit bored.

My parents went on a cruise last year (after being very anti-cruise) and they thought they'd hate it but they both absolutely loved it. They will definitely have enough for your child. I'd say it's worth a consideration.

yep i'd agree with that. We had ours booked about 8 months in advance, it was really good to have something to look forward to... and we really pushed the boat out as we had never been on a luxury holiday before.

Also, for Southend based people, we used Aquarian Travel up at Highlands. My family and relatives have used them for years and so we got them on the case with our honeymoon. They did everything through email and they got us an amazing holiday for an amazing price. We did tons of research and we couldn't get anywhere near the price they got. They also got us Business class flights for the way home at no cost because the airline tried to bump us, and they sent us a card for our wedding and a bunch of flowers. We'd 100% recommend them, they were fantastic.

Not being funny mate but why take Danish?? you and the mrs need some time away from the boy, it wont hurt

Cheers for that recomednation Pubey, have been looking for a company that would organise it all but not take the ****. I usually like organising my own holidays, but think that going to three places with very little knowledge would have been pushing my capabilities a bit!

Our honeymoon was a package with Virgin (who tailormade it), but Aquarian were very very good. Trailfinders are very good, although their prices were too much for use really. They were trying to get us to do 5* hotels in Sri Lanka and 3* in the Maldives, but with virgin we got 4* across the board for less price.

do virgin do the scheme where your wedding guests can pay off part of your honeymoon as a present? as we were thinking of doing that, as we have a gaff and all the relevent homely bits and bobs already!

Why Taiwan - that's a bit of a detour isn't? Thailand and Malaysia are obviously bordering countries, but that must be about a 4 hour flight over to Taiwan?

My main tip would be not to try and cram too much in, although admittedly it's one I rarely heed myself. A 21 day trip will become more like a 14 day holiday fitting that much in as you basically write off a day, sometimes more - especially getting there - every time you move places. I'd suggest hitting the beach straight away. Bangkok is a great city (or at least use to be), but it's not nearly as alluring when you're jet-lagged and adjusting to the heat. Far better to do that on the beach and if you're planning on spending time in Bangkok doing that on the way back.

If you do go to Bangkok, and want a good hotel I'd recommend the Peninsula. I regret not taking the private helicopter transfer from the airport, when I stayed there. You might need to shop around for some decent rates, as I'd imagine their headline rates are a bit pricey and you might get quoted some astronomical figures from UK travel agents.

Vertigo bar at the Banyan Tree is a must for cocktails at sun-set for the view, and Bed Supper Club was the best nightspot last time I was there (a fair few years ago, admittedly).

What coast you should go to, will depend much on what time of the year you go. I went to Ko Phangan in Thailand and Tioman off Malaysia. If a small, basic, beach hut on the sand, in amongst the palm trees, with the warm water lapping quietly at your feet is your type of thing, then both can do a passable impersonation of paradise.

I must admit, I haven't been back to Tioman, where I learnt to dive, for fear of it being developed and my picture postcard images of it being distorted forever. If you're a diver and 30m vis, immaculate coral reefs and water so warm that you feel as if you are in the bath is your type of thing, then the diving wasn't too shabby either.

Ko Phangan also boasts the Full Moon parties and you can't beat dancing away on the beach to some killer tunes as the sun slowly rises over the horizon (except maybe if you tell them you played MK's wedding they let you, as a world famous DJ, onto the decks to play through sun-rise).

Personally, unless you are going the luxury (ie Peninsula) route, I'd favour just rocking up at these places. I can't remember these places ever being full and if you don't like the look of it, or prefer another one more, you can just move on, but can understand if for your honeymoon you want it all sorted.

Organising sometihng lastminute.com is infinitely more organised that anything planned with 'military precision.'

Thanks for the tips YB. To be honest going to Taiwan is just something i always fancied doing ever since i saw the Taipai Tower on some programme, however i didnt realise it was so far from Thailand and Malaysia, and in that respect, will probably forgoe it (this i guess goes back to my earlier point of not knowing the region!).

is the Aquarian travel the one in leigh btw? (also do they do the gift thing?)
It's on the London road at highlands, opposite where Wings and Wheels was.

Ha, pure quality. Just been reading through the roles of the bride/groom/best man etc, and apparently tradition dictates that the best man pays for the grooms half of the church fees... just got to send my matey a quick text!
