Andy Sussex 90 apps / 15 goals
Alan Little 118 apps / 13 goals

Not much in it from that perspective, though i never saw little play i do recall a couple of Sussex goals with fondness. Opening game of 93/94 and Forest in town, Stan was ill but they still had some fine players, Stuart Pearce included but barely 2 minutes in and Sussex dived into a scramble of bodies to divert the ball over the line, replays proved he'd punched the ball in but got away with it. Pearce leveled the scores from the spot before halftime and thats how it stayed. This of course was the side that Fry built with the money from Stan which swept all before them till December when the odious Brum slag Brady stole him away :'(
Also in what was actually the previous match Luton came to Southend for what we all knew would be Stans farewell .. 11,000+ at the Hall and a fantastic volley from Sussex sent us on the way to safety and relegated the 2 sides that had cost us the title 2 years previously in Cambridge and Brentford

Yeah well I'm inclined to go for Sussex for the exact reasons you've mentioned. Plus I feel more confident in speaking up for a player who I saw play than one who I didn't.

I saw Alan Little play and he was pretty good, tenacious but not dirty. Nearest comparison to a recent player is that I think he was a bit similar to Guttridge....but taller.

Going for Sussex:

Adam Federici

Dean Austin
Alan Moody
Adam Barrett
Alex 'Sandy' Anderson

Andy Ansah
Alan McCormack
Andy Sussex
Anton Otulakowski

Brett Angell
Albert Wakefield

OBL, can you think of any dirty players we've had, or have they all been more sinned against than sinners?

Keeping on topic, I liked Sussex but he was, I felt, like John Cornwall in that he was more of a squad player than a regular. For that reason I'd lean towards Alan Little who was before my time as a player.

Thing was, back in that era, players were "hard" and it was just accepted. There were certainly those that got booked regularly, Chris Guthrie and Dave Cunningham spring to mind, and as to dirty players well, yes, I know Macca had his moments if that's what you're wanting me to say! I think you can safely say Efe did too. Depends if you count grappling as dirty, both Clarke and Barrett were very culpable in that area. Nicky Bailey was a nasty piece of work though, yes he had undoubted skills but I can certainly remember some very sinful stuff! Maybe this is an idea for a new thread eh Yorkie?

Wasn't fishing for a Macca confession at all, was more curious as you seem to have a touch of the Arsenes about you when it comes to our players dishing it out, whilst being quick to complain in your match reports when our players are on the receiving end of it.

Unequivocally Andy Smillie for Sussex.
