Breaking News European Silverware for Southend United

Well done to the boys, I knew the Wiggins family quite well at one point and knew Jacob was playing at the CofE but hadn't realised he was on this.

Just seen Ron.........apart from passing on his congratulations, he was interested to know if the Trophy was in solid silver and if so, the weight, so as to know how much he could get for it.

I'm sure Dan can tell the full story but I think Luca was also wanted by West Ham and Charlton. He wouldn't even talk to West Ham and he made it perfectly clear to Charlton that he only wanted to play for Southend. They were insistant and he went for a trial (I think it was a spying mission really) and although impressed by their facilties signed for Southend of course and has signed on again for the coming season.

What is a shadow squad Dan?

It's a way of the club keeping tabs on local talent without signing huge numbers of players at each age group. Usually they're attached to the club, but only train once, maybe twice, a week and tend to play for set teams outside of the official SUFC bracket. If a player does well for the shadow squads, he's placed into the youth squad and if a player doesn't perform for the youth squad, instead of getting rid and possibly missing out on late-blooming talent, they're placed into a shadow squad.

Arsenal have a similar set-up at Rayleigh.

Congrats to the team. No doubt Ron will now sell them all, claiming they were about to down tools, but promising a raft of new under 10s will be itching to join the club when they see the diggers on Fossets Farm.

Just to add to this the Under 9's also won their tournament and the other two sides we entered finished 2nd and fourth. There is a mini report on the OS of each days results, but it is buried under the shadow squad section.

Shadow Squad

So in 10 years' time we'll win the Champion's League. That'll help me through the long winter going round Bradford, Macclesfield and Torquay.

Think one of my kids from school actually was on this, maybe not in the same squad but certainly won the player of the tournament for the Blues.
