Essex Cricket Club and SUFC

I attended both Chalkwell Pk and Southchurch Pk for Essex games but much preferred the latter for atmosphere. Got Keith Miller's autograph there when the Aussies visited and Essex, under the late Trevor Bailey, beat them. Happy days indeed.
Played football (possibly cricket) with Kim Bailey in Chalkwell Park

What I remember is having to use a milk churn for a toilet and towards the end of the day it used to overflow. I assume that they just tipped it over and let it empty over the grass when everybody went home. No Portaloos in those days. Saw Essex beat the Australians in the 60s at Southchurch Park I think.

Yes—Phelan was a spinbowler and quite a good left back. I think there was a similar youngster from the same era, called Terry Kent.
Our top wicket taker with 10 wickets in the match when Essex beat the Australians at Southchurch.

One more to add to the list from our early years is goalkeeper Percy Toone, who first appeared for Southend United in the Southern League in 1909.

Born in 1883 in Colchester, he represented the Army, Arsenal and Leyton before joining Blues, going on to play for Preston North End, Barrow, Bolton Wanderers, Plymouth Argyle and Newport County, as well as serving as a sergeant during the First World War.

He made his debut for Essex against Kent at Gravesend in 1912, but played the majority of matches for the county in 1920 and 1921 before retiring in 1922, with his final appearance coming against Hampshire at Portsmouth. A right-arm fast bowler, he took 62 wickets at 31.51 in 29 first-class appearances. He later served as an umpire in the 1930 County Championship campaign.
