Southend United Football Club is delighted to announce a new Good Neighbour partnership with Essex Cricket, marking a new chapter of collaboration between two of Essex's most historic sporting organisations.

The partnership underscores a shared commitment to engaging with local communities through sport, promoting health and well-being, and offering inclusive opportunities for fans of all ages. This unique agreement will see the two clubs working hand-in-hand to deliver joint initiatives, host cross-sport events, and provide fans with unparalleled experiences.

The first event, exclusive to businesses in the Essex region, is the ‘On the Ball! Networking Event’ and will be held at the Cliffs Pavilion on Tuesday 11th February 2025. Details can be found by clicking here.

Rylee Doe, Commercial Manager at Southend United, commented: “This partnership with Essex Cricket is a natural fit, bringing together two iconic institutions that hold deep roots in the Essex community. At Southend United, we believe in creating meaningful connections that go beyond the pitch.

"By collaborating with Essex Cricket, we’re excited to introduce innovative initiatives that not only celebrate the love of sport but also contribute to the well-being and unity of our local community.”

Daryl Townson, Commercial Manager at Essex Cricket, added: “Essex Cricket takes immense pride in engaging with our community, with building strong relationships with the region’s sports clubs an important factor.

“Our partnership with Southend United exemplifies this, and we’re thrilled to collaborate on initiatives like the ‘On the Ball! Networking Event,’ strengthening ties across Essex through sport.”

Fans are encouraged to follow both Southend United’s and Essex Cricket’s official channels for updates regarding the partnership.

As part of the partnership, Adam Crowther and James Morton took on cricketers Sam Cook and Tom Westley in a challenge promoting wefinanceanycar.com.

Maybe Essex could bring back having a match in Southend? Been far too long since they played here and they're one of the few counties who don't play at outgrounds
One of the reasons back in the day was because the Essex C.C.C comittee were mainly based in North Essex and hated coming to Southend which at that time had left Southchurch Park to play at Garons Park. So then Southend Festival week (or 4 days?) was cancelled forever but Colchester still retained their annual festival week. To be fair I had been a member for many years back then and when working always had a weeks holiday with many friends because Southchurch Park was always a great venue. Sadly Garon's Park was not for whatever reason. (Think it is now about 20 years? since we last played at Southchurch Park).

Essex cricket week in Southend, long before Southchurch Park but at Chalkwell Park was brilliant, At that time the club used to go around all local grounds in Essex.

I attended both Chalkwell Pk and Southchurch Pk for Essex games but much preferred the latter for atmosphere. Got Keith Miller's autograph there when the Aussies visited and Essex, under the late Trevor Bailey, beat them. Happy days indeed.
He was a member of the Walthamstow Avenue side which won the FA Amateur Cup in 1951–2, winning the final before a Wembley crowd of 100,000. The following season, he played in the side which reached the fourth round of the FA Cup. Drawn against Manchester United at Old Trafford, they drew 1–1. The replay took place at Highbury with Manchester United winning 5–2.

He had previously played for Southend reserves and later became a director of the club. Indeed, he is still listed as a shareholder despite having passed away tragically in a fire at his Westcliff retirement flat at the age of 87 nearly 14 years ago.

Southchurch Park was in use from 1906-2004, Chalkwell Park 1934-1976, then Garon Park 2005-2011.

Memory might be playing tricks on me but I believe that for a short period around the late 60's/early 70's Essex played at both Southchurch and Chalkwell, I certainly seem to recall seeing a County game at Southchurch and a Sunday League game at Chalkwell in the same summer.

I'm afraid my membership ceased the day they voted to discontinue the Southend Festival, that was such a 'political' decision. Colchester was retained even though it made less money than Southend as 'getting to Southend is too difficult for members'... No thought to the fact that the North Essex 'mafia' only had to travel to Southend for a few days but Southend area members had to travel to Chelmsford for virtually every game after Romford and Ilford went. The additional argument was that they wanted more use out of the County Ground after spending some money on it.

The biggest missed opportunities, to me, were the short sightedness of a) not buying New Writtle Street when Chelmsford went and, b) not taking the opportunity to buy the Carreras ground at Nevendon. Either ground could have been developed to be the Essex equivalent to Durham's Chester-le-Street or Southampton's Rose Bowl...

@Cockle43 No tricks being played, unless I have the same tricks as you! I was going to post similarly. I'm certain that both venues were used in the Southend Cricket Festival Week in the same summer(s).

Fred Truman’s run up started at the Southchurch park boundary,
When Big Bird played at Southchurch Park they had to put another couple of feet on top of the sightscreens as he was so tall, at 6' 8", his hand was over the top!
They were some cracking tussles at the time with Somerset. Essex were a force to be reckoned with and when Somerset rolled into town with Richards, Garner, and Botham in their line up the matches were a bit special!

Great to see the link re enforced between both clubs

Could Essex play a t20 at Roots Hall and our next Cup round match at County Ground Chelmsford, after all first ever FA CUP match played at ? :Hilarious:
