So sad to read Ex Essex player Reece Topley out for the season, with a back stress fracture, played just two games in three years for Hampshire
Hope comes back stronger next year
Very disappointing night at Oval last night, something is not right at the club, maybe expectation too high, but the team spirit seems to missing
Too many runs conceded by Essex in first 5 overs, 24 from first over and bowlers losing line and length and then the ultimate sin 15 extras in the innings plus three dropped catches 38-1 could have easily been 38-3
Batting started off well going at 10 an over, but you didn't feel we had a match winner, Ravi was out within two balls and then Batty turned the game with good line and length and some poor shots, aided by Morkel who really is super fast
Not sure what has gone wrong this season but team spirit doesn't seem to be there

Expectation is certainly too high in T20.
This is a very poor T20 side on paper. The batting’s not explosive enough, the bowling’s too predictable, the fielding too pedestrian and most disappointingly the tactics are from another era.
The T20 team should be built around the likes of Walter and Zaidi not Porter and Harmer. McGrath needs to be far more flexible and inventive with the batting order, using Coles up the order in the right combinations etc
Essex made a decision to concentrate on the County Championship when Irani took over and I’m fine with that but this is the consequence of making signings for the 4 day game. If McGrath is the man to coach the 4 day side I’d be in favour of a specialist T20 coach/tactician because even with that unsuited squad he’s not making the most of it. For those interested in the evolution of T20 tactics I’d recommend reading some of Jarrod Kimber’s stuff on cricinfo.

I'd completely forgotten that Dmitri Mascarenhas was appointed this year as he will bring a tactical nous to our white-ball cricket
