Essex 2014

awesome game yesterday, Essex chase down 190 despite a middle order no-one has heard of. James Foster's big over proved decisive. Orangeboom is **** though...

I know you are only (half) joking, but has a genuine reason ever been put forward. It really is a disgrace.

I think it was nominally because members weren't overly keen on it, but I don't quite understand why the loss making Colchester festival wasn't questioned whereas the profit making Southend festival was put on the chopping block.

Of course if they played 15 games in Southend and 1 in Chelmsford they'd have a very different membership base, and that membership base would probably vote to stay for that extra game in Southend instead of having to traipse over to Chelmsford and the three train journeys there (and a further three train journeys back) that it entails.

Ravi was stoking things up the other day and suggesting that festivals were the future and that they should resurrect the old Ilford festival at Valentine's Park....

Was hoping they'd play in Southend this year but alas. I mean, there is at least 16 First Class games, 14 T20's and 8 ODI's.

Why not have the Festival at Colchester - 1 FC, 1 T20
Southend Festival (Southchurch Park) - 1FC, 1 T20, 1 ODI
West Essex (Near Romford way) - 1 ODI
Claction Way - 1 FC, 1 T20
Chelmsford - 13 FC, 11 T20's, 6 ODI's.

How is that not enough for them?

We may have problem attracting One-Day Internationals to Chelmsford (other than women's) plus we'll need to play some away games as well:winking:

Every time I went to Garons for the Championship game, the old ****** members spent the whole time moaning about getting there, lack of food options, that Essex lost, etc.

Once a bloody year is too much for those spoilt, selfish old *****.

Still not bitter all these years down the line...

Cheers YB.

The Times love the festivals at the outgrounds and were very effusive in their praise of the Colchester one last week. Would be great to have Ilford and Southend back; Ilford reminds me of first following Essex back in the 1980s.

Middlesex are currently going in the opposite direction to Essex - playing more games at the outgrounds such as Uxbridge, Northwood, Southgate and Radlett. This is also financially influenced of course as they are only tenants at Lord's and it's not profitable for them to play poorly attended CC games there.

More generally, surely variety is one of the strengths of county cricket. Given that the teams represent entire counties rather than individual towns and cities (I'm looking at you, Birmingham Bears) they should be bringing their game to as wide an audience as possible.

So glad Ilford got a mention on here.
If I remember rightly, it was actually dropped in 2002 or 2003 in favour of The Southend festival!
They need to bring BOTH back.
Being an Ilford boy, I know for a fact that Valentine's Park would be absolutely rammed if they did it there now, such is the love of cricket of the locals there, the majority of Pakistani heritage, also Indian and Sri Lanka - they would love it, embrace it, fill the place up - and more.
Surely that's what should matter, ensuring that the grass roots and future generations are sustained.
As kids, we all used to go training at the famous indoor Ilford Cricket School in Redbridge, a certain Joe Hussain (father of Nasser) ran it. We used to love the summer festivals and left all wanting to play for Essex. There's no real incentive now, or trigger at least.
What now for the kids today... and in Southend. Again - bring them back.
Not a good message from ECCC

Ilford's club has fallen to pot though. No alcohol and therefore running on very little money over there now. Joe Hussain - legend.

I wouldn't go back to Ilford and I don't think that will happen for a long time.

There is a rumour doing the rounds that Essex are looking to buy another second ground just off of a well known motorway...

A great shame - I only left there two and half years ago and drove through there the other day.
Place started going downhill years ago and really is just another East London dump now.
