England v South Africa - 1st Test @ Lord's

163/3 and tea. Good session for England and the bonus has been Bell. Lucky on a couple of occasions perhaps but he's looked the most convincing of the English batsmen so far. Hopefully he can turn this excellent (and quick scoring) start in to a good score.

Awful decision by the awful Harper turned the session the Saffers way. The ball clearly pitched outside leg - I couldn't believe it when he was given out and that was before the aid of replays confirming it.

That allowed Steyn to bowl at the right-handed Vaughan, having struggled to find the right line for the lefties at the top of the order. Steyn promptly cleaned up Vaughan's stumps. Cook then skied a pull, although I'd like to have another look at the side-on replay and check how far Morkel's foot was behind the line.

Bell then played fluently and the stage is perfectly set for him to come of age and make a meaningful, leading contribution. The Saffers are giving nothing to KP to hit, bowling a mixture of short pitch stuff interspersed with yorkers.

Finally, I give you a lookalike:

I've watched the past 30 minutes since getting home and the Seffies are bowling poorly. Over-hyped attack, and Harris looks nothing special at all. Pietersen is ticking and it's good entertainment.

Building up for a good day tomorrow, really hope these two can stay in and put in a decent effort till lunch tomorrow. Once they go I have no particular faith in Colly or Ambrose to see us through to a decent total.

A good first day for England and now they have to build on it. Agree with YB that the Saffers attack is one dimensional, as is their captain. And from what little I have seen of him Harris is nowhere near test class.

Hard to disagree with any of that, even the agreeing with me bit. South Africa seem to lack subtlety with little middle ground between trying to blast a team out and trying to bore a team out be it with either batting or bowling. I suppose Greg "Graeme" Smith at least tried to make lots of bowling changes to keep things fresh. I however think KP's assessment of him was spot on, when I think of Smith I always think of the guy at the end of Lethal Weapon 2 when the bloke with a South African accent goes "Diplometic Immunety" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5BF__8WC1g

Watching KP go through the gears is one of the delights of world cricket and he made sure that was England's day. I make the draw strong favourite, the uncertain weather combined with the Lords pitch meant it was always going to be difficult to force a result.

england are in a great position at the moment but with the weather being like it is i'm going for a draw on this one.

Pietersen out for 152

Damn .. i was looking forward to watching him bat when i get home in about an hour

Bell unbeaten on 112 England 412 - 4

Hehe, good to see Colly and Ambrose repaying my faith! Good old Broad.....

Must have been good day to go B.......nothing better then seeing wrack up the runs....especially after being putting in by 'The Witness' Smith.

Must be tempting to have a bowl soon, but Id rather us bat on and get the runs in the 1st innnings. Maybe have about an hour aftert tea to let Bell try to get to 200 and Broad have a hit for 3 figures, then have about 18 overs at them before the close.

Absolute dominance. Been watching near enough every minute and whilst our players have batted well to get their respective scores, there's been little threat from South Africa. Two things have disappointed me with the South Africans. Firstly, Steyn has generally had very little aggression when this would seem to be the thing that ups his game. Secondly, every preview I read seemed to be telling me about how the South African pace attack was one of the most relentless. It's been anything but. A good second session perhaps but the other 5 have been England's.

Still, not complaining much. Put a tenner on England at 5s after trading out for a small loss on the South African bet. Annoying that I'm fighting weather forecasts now but still, it's coming in nicely.

Less said about my bet on Vaughan to top score the better....

I too have been reading a few reports that have been bigging up the Saffers pace attack....and often those stated that they were being compared to the West Indies attack of the 80's!! Has anyone actually read the articles that suggested this?!

As ever though, I dont like to judge an innings too much until both teams have bowled on the wicket...

Most opinion here is a declaration at around 5 and have an hour at them. Hopefully will give Bell time to get the double ton up.

My Lords experienced has been enhanced by them adding Bow to the taps!

To be honest, it doesn't seem to offer the bowlers too much although it's hard to tell really. The thought of us trying to take twenty wickets on this pitch is a little daunting when you consider the quality of some oftheir batsmen.
