England Squad

To say he can only hit a dead ball is ridiculous. Have you seen how he plays 60 yard inch perfect passes time after time?

Beckham would still be my first name on the team sheet for qualifiers.

Time after time he's rescued England. Whenever England have faced awkward opponents and are only drawing 0-0 in a game they are supposed to win its Beckham who inevitably steps up and either scores or creates a goal. If you want someone for end product, there's no-one English better than Beckham. Hell, you could probably justify picking him on the basis of his set-pieces alone (how many world cup games were decided by set-pieces?) even if he didn't continually play those 60 yard perfect passes.

I couldn't care less that he's playing in America. How do you know the standard there is akin to League One? How many MLS games have you seen? Most of the people bad-mouthing MLS are bad-mouthing it on the basis that they are Americans and don't know anything about football - I mean they call it soccer, so MLS must be bad. I don't know what the standard is like. I know that the US have a decent international team, although many of their players play abroad, particularly at Fulham where they do quite well. It may not be competitive, but then how competitive is the world's greatest ever league (TM), when only 3 teams can win it and the team who finishes 4th is often closer to relegation than the title?

Is it necessarily a bad thing if it was an easier level as a player who is able to amble round for 40 games rather than play 60+ games in the premier$hite may actually be fresher. Class is permanent, and Beckham has class. He may not be able to last 90 minutes, but you are allowed to make substitutions.

The amazing thing about Beckham is how underappreciated he is in his own country.

I haven't witnessed Beckham consistently hit inch-perfect passes for a couple of years now. His powers in that respect have waned considerably, although he does possess good vision. From what I saw of the England midfield against Israel and Russia at home (and the first half of the away game), they performed better with the lineup in the latter games than they did in the previous games when Beckham was included. On that basis there would be no room for him in my starting XI

Five has showed a few MLS games since Beckham went over there. The standard looks to be sub-championship level to me.

As if he needed to feather his nest, he was already one of the richest players in the world before he signed that deal, let alone afterwards.
He could have gone to another - albeit lesser - team in la liga or the Premiership. That he didn't shows that greed has taken precedent over his playing career.

He could have....I dont know what offers he did receive but Im sure there were clubs in both happy to sign him. However, after winning the treble, playing in 3 world cups, and winning La Liga, would you rather return to a league you have already played in many seasons and be at a mid table team, or embark on a new and potentially exciting project. I would go for the later any day.

He (or at least his wife) obviously want to lay foundations for what they do after Beck's legs invariable go, and I cant blame them for that. Greedy....maybe as they have plenty of money to go round, however so do ALL the players in or around the England team. However, Becks has managed the difficult feat of balancing a celebrity life style with a succesful career on the field, and when he is on the pitch he doesnt strike me as someone thinking about the money.

Becks has always been willing to play through pain, travel and give his all for England. Even in friendlies he never used to pull out through 'mysterious injuries' like so many others have. I sensed he was genuinly proud to play for his country, as well as being damned talented, and for that Id have him ahead of a Downing, Bentley or Defore any day.

I wouldn't pick Downing or Defoe over him either since they play in different positions on the pitch! ;)

Seriously though, I can see your point and I don't dispute that Beckham is proud to play for his country, I just get annoyed with the clamour to involve him in the team when he is clearly past his best and (IMO) better options exist.

What did he have to achieve at a lesser La Liga team or premier$hite team? He's won the premier$hite, he's won La Liga, he's won the FA Cup, he's won the Champion$ League.

What was to be gained by going to England or Spain?

I'm sure the money was nice, but maybe he was driven by ambition to try and do what Pele tried and failed and break football into the American mainstream as a spectator sport.

Or maybe it was a lifestyle decision, LA being one of the few places he can live a "normal" lifestyle. Maybe it was a family decision to help re-launch his wife's career. As nice as the money is, maybe other things also drive him life.

Maybe it was the prospect of going to a country where success is viewed as positive rather than resented.

But surely trying to improve the fortunes of a lesser side in a league of a decent quality is an exciting project, certainly I'd find it more exciting than going through the motions in a poor league just because your wife wants to live in LA...

Besides, he could have gone to a team in any of the top European leagues.

Bit of blow about Rooney.

Hopefully Heskey will be fit by then, as he did well partnering Owen in the home games recently. If not we'll have to rely on Crouch as his partner...

100% spot on.

Beckham IS a fantastic player. His range of passing, work rate, dead ball skills (Lampard and Gerrard have been nowhere near that standard since Becks aint been in the England squad), desire, pride to play for England make him one of my faviourite players I've seen.

What are the odds that Rooney magically becomes fit the weekend after the internationals I wonder....? ;)

Thats what annoys me about the players that play for England.

They all come out saying how much of a honour it is to play for their country and wear the three lions, but how many times does the likes of Rio, Lampard, Gerrard etc etc pull out of an International match (mainly friendlies) only to play at the weekend for their club sides. Its disgusting!

I've been out for three weeks with a broken thumb (I play in goal), but if I got the call up for England, I must be pretty close, then I would play in goal with a broken thumb, but this footballers just don't seem to care which is why I'd rather see Southend win promotion this season then England qualify for Euro 2008.
