Encouraging interview

Can you give those of us at work an idea what Ron said.

Cheers

BBC Essex interviews

Also Tilly confirms Ricketts is now fit but needs to get MATCH fit so expect at least 1 more reserve game I would think.
I cant hear it either as work PCs have no sound cards

What did he say about the new stadium?

IIRC we were supposed to submit plans in September?

He was basically talking about Freddy and how there will be more money for Tilson if he needs it, in the winter transfer window period! Also, he hopes to start discussing a longer contract (with better money!) with Eastwood's agent sooner rather than later, especially now the transfer window has shut.

I think something that got lost on transfer deadline day amid all that `we've signed Matt Harold, I'm going to throw myself off the nearest cliff' hysteria (is there an emoticon for `egg on face'?) was that Ron lived up to his promise he made on the pitch after the Bristol City match.

By my very approx estimate we must have spent around £1.5million on players (transfer fees and signing on fees) but the most important bit of business in my opinion was that we didn't sell anyone.
The players that were already here that we wanted to keep have been offered much better deals (or they wouldn't have stayed) and there's a few managers that have said recently ``I was interested in the lad Eastwood but it didn't even get past the first hurdle'' Basically, Ron said `No, we're not interested in selling him' and kept his word. I compare that to when Stan Collymore arrived. We were quibbing with Crystal Palace about paying them £110,000 but the day after he signed we were touting him around for £1million. If Vic had had his way then Stan would have been flogged to Forest on transfer deadline day (in March) for £1.75million, before Barry Fry arrived, and no-one can seriously imagine we would have stayed up without Stan that season. It was only because Brian Clough pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute that we were saved.
Vic couldn't see the bigger picture and couldn't wait to cash in on his biggest asset.
Ron is to be applauded for an excellent summer's work.

Now that's one of the best posts I've read on chit-chat for ages. Nice one FB !

Re Freddy he basically said that he will get offers but he won't be accepting any and that most people don't seem to realise that Freddy is best off at Southend. He also says that the club are willing to offer him a new contract on a far higher wage and that this is a club going places in terms of the new stadium. He says that once we get the new stadium we'll be able to compete very well in the Championship and have higher expectations whilst being able to raise the bar and pay the players more money and give them what they deserve. In terms of Freddy he agrees with the interviewer on the fact that he's a bit of a "homer" and indicates that it is Freddy's agent and NOT Freddy that he needs to convince Southend is the best place for him to continue that development as we are a growing club who in around 3 seasons time will hopefully be able to push on significantly from where we are now.

Another point worth mentioning re: Freddys agent is that he is Struan Thomas, Steven Gerrards agent.

This is promising because for those that saw the serialisation of Gerrards Autobiography, Gerrard makes it very clear that his agent was very supportive of him when he handed in his transfer request and helped him make the decision that where he was was better for him because of how "at home" he felt at Liverpool. Good to see that the obvious lure of money from Chelsea didn't work on Thomas.

Im sure he did when the cut he takes wouldnt really be too different in the world of 80K a week footballers.

However the cut he gets from Freddys wages at Southend would give him great enthusiams to clinch a mega bugs deal.

I dont think we should be looking on this guy as a nice fluffy friend. He is just a Champagne Richard Cody.

Agreed on this.

Freddy'a agent's interests will be best served if Fred gets more money. This means we have to either offer Fred more money, say we'll be able to offer more in the long run or say that by staying with us, he will be able to get more money more quickly.

FWIW, Fred's never struck me as the greediest of players.

I'm not being funny but if he is Stevie G's agent i dont think he ( the Agent ) is going to be short of a few bob !!!!!!!!

Guys, I cant tell you how I know this but not all football agents are sharks out to systematically rape every club for their own personal gain. True, the Codys of this world have painted a very poor picture of the vocation but football representation has come a long way in the last five years. I have worked with a few agents now and can vouch for the fact that most work very hard for a deal which, unless the player gets sold or offered improved terms, is all that the agent will earn for the duration of the contract. This is usually around 5%. Sure, when you talk about the Beckhams et al, 5% is a lot of money, but if you are an agent with say ten league two players on your books, you will often be lucky to make £10k from each! I dont know Mr Thomas but rest assured he will do all he can to protect and project Freddy. If Freddy doesnt want a move, he will not be forced to make one. This is even better for Mr Thomas if the club are willing to offer new terms, its like an extra pay day as often the buying club will insist on a share of the agents fee for their representative. It is illegal for an agent to represent both player and club. Therefore, Mr Thomas may well prefer Freddy to stay and sign a new deal (of which Mr Thomas gets 5% with no real work involved, very nice indeed!!

So, am I the only one concerned at the fact that Uncle Ron effectively admitted that we're currently living beyond our means...?

Common Knowledge isn't it MtS??..

If we can survive the next 2 or 3 years in The Championship, i'm sure we will be a permanent fixture from then on, with our shiny new stadium and average gates of 13,000+
