Seaman was sold by Peterborough to Birmingham for £100k.

Benyon and Timlin have been poor signings from a club that when we signed them was not too many points ahead of us but deemed by their manager, who has had an extremely successful first year in management as surplus to his requirements.

Yet our fans were clamouring for us to sign Timlin when on trial.

It doesnt matter how many points Swindon were on when we signed him, their squad is better than ours and a player not deemed good enough for them can still be better than what we had. Which Timlin was, even though recently he has been disappointing.

This. We seem to have had the opinion our team was one of the, if not the best team in the league. I don't know whether this is because we were top for a while or not, but this has become apparent that this is clearly not the case. Swindon had a league one promotion chasing side in league two, just because a player isn't good enough for them doesn't mean they wouldn't be good for us.

And 39 in 75 starts prior to that. Funny you don't mention those.

The stats tell the story perfectly - he's a good lower league goalscorer who took a move up a division (to a struggling team) which hasn't paid off. He will score again in the right team. He's only 24 years old and was scoring regularly at this level as recently as January last year.

What have we got to judge him on so far? Practically nothing. He's played less than 10 games and hasn't had the ball to feet as we know he needs. He's not had a run in the team.

For me he looks a decent player and a decent buy, whether he makes it here or at another team where he fits in better I don't know, but I'd certainly take him as a 3rd/4th choice striker. If we want him to win it in the air then he's best to move on, but if we plan on a bit of passing and moving I like what I see so far.

David Seaman was released by Peterborough. Sean Clohessey was released by Gillingham IIRC. Michael Kightly was released by us. Different players suit different styles, clubs and managers, and develop at different stages of their career.
this is the point though, unless you are paying top dollar to prize someone away they are always going to be coming from a club that doesn't want them

Are we going to have a separate thread for every player who played poorly on weds night? Give the guy a break, he was having to win hopeless long punts or misplaced passes all night until he got subbed. He has a good record at this level but he needs better service.

I didn't want him.

Those 39 goals were actually scored from 125 appearances of which 75 were starts, but there's no doubting he was, at that time, a very prolific goalscorer. Is he the footballing equivalent of a one-hit wonder ? I don't know but I do know that playing him in the way Sturrock did on Wednesday he'd be lucky to get double figures in a season.

That time was only 16 months ago, and at 24 years old I doubt he's a busted flush.

He is obviously dependent on the supply that we give him and the way that we play. I don't think Sturrock sent the players out there on Wednesday to hoof the ball over the head of Benyon, rather that was what we ended up doing because of how high the Crewe players were pressing us and how poor our passing was. If we're going to do nothing but hoof the ball next season then we're not going to get the best of Benyon - or Harris for that matter.

I do think Benyon would have looked better alongside a Barry Corr or a Matt Harrold - a natural targetman who will take those high balls down and create chances for a finisher like Benyon.

Poor player who brings nothing to the table other than a decent first touch and a large bottom.

Seems unfit still despite signing in January, looks overweight and lacking confidence.

Not his fault that he was selected, but I do not think it is any coincidence how better we performed when he was replaced.

Since he has been he, he is too small to be a presence, he lacks pace, he has missed decent chances, he doesn't work particularly hard, he isn't vocal.....to be a complete clanger of a signing by PS. What makes it worse is that we actually paid a fee for him.

I would give him a chance, a full pre season and next year we will see the best of Benyon, he didn't become a bad player over night, I hope I am right as I was impressed when he played for Torquay before he moved to Swindon.

If he doesn't get a proper chance here could see him being another Charlie Mac (getting chased out of the club by the fans and going on to prove us all wrong).
